Trust lubricates collaboration. Active Listening: I listen more than I speak. Understanding stakeholder pain points is essential. Sometimes, a heartfelt conversation over coffee reveals insights that shape project success.

People will do what a leader says because they want to, not because they have to. As a leader, you can achieve this kind of following by earning the trust and respect of the people you lead. This comes over time through many small instances of integrity, which is doing what you say you will do. If you don't, owning up to it and apologizing will earn you credibility.

The way you communicate is a HUGE factor in how people perceive your credibility and knowledge. Being clear when conveying a concept means the person receiving the message is able to understand the concept quickly with little distraction. Practicing your delivery is necessary especially when you are somewhat unfamiliar with the topic OR the audience. Every person receives information differently, and you need to be a detective to learn how they best understand. Then you customize your message to THEM. You may have to create three different formats; one message at a high level with the highest impact bullet points, one as an infographic to explain the basics, and one with details for those who will be building the project.

Good communication removes all doubt. When I managed over 100 employees, we had rigorous standards on how and when they were expected to communicate with clients. These standards were written down and reviewed when they started the job. We regularly audited their written work to ensure the standards were being met. Communicating clearly helped our organization set reasonable expectations for clients, and ensured we could exceed them.

One thing that people don't frequently keep in mind is the cost of indecision. In my career, I've seen countless founders who take too long to make a decision. They end up being in a worse scenario than if they had made the "wrong" decision much more quickly. Ultimately, lack of a decision is also a decision, and it can paralyze or hurt a business. Jeff Bezos famously says that you should make decisions based on having 70% of the information you need.

Data-Driven Decisions: I analyze data rigorously. Weighing pros and cons is essential. Sometimes, gut feelings align with data; other times, they diverge. Trusting the evidence is crucial. Decisiveness: Indecision paralyzes teams. Leaders assess risks, consult, and then decide. Even if it’s a tough call, owning it is essential.

There is a whole book on this, edited by James Archer and myself, entitled: 'Business Analysis and Leadership: Influencing Change'. This covers aspects of leadership of self, leadership within your project/team, being a leader within your organisation and leadership beyond, in the wider world.

Vision Casting: I paint a compelling picture of the future. Rallying stakeholders around this vision is crucial. How will the project impact the organization? That’s what I emphasize. Negotiation Skills: Influencing without authority is part of my role. Negotiating scope, timelines, and resources is essential. Sometimes, finding win-win solutions is an art.
