What do you do if your continuing education doesn't align with your long-term career goals?

If you find yourself in a role that is not in alignment with your career goals, I advise you to do two things: 1) Keep making progress where you are - you never know what's around the corner. 2) Document your ultimate career plan, identify the skills that are transferable, then a development plan to close the gaps. In this day and age, we have to be creative how we solve our career challenges.

To start with, one should define the concept of "long-term". My long-term goals, when I was in my 20's, was certainly not aligned with the goals on my 40's! That is another proof of how time is relative! I am a biologist, by training, with post-degrees in Management, Marketing and an MBA. Started my professional life as a field biologist and for the last years working as a senior manager. Set a path, but keep exploring alternative plans. That includes skills and knowledge. Broaden your network. Challenge yourself and your established goals. They will(!) change over time.

It also doesn't hurt to consider seeking mentorship or guidance from professionals in your desired field. They can offer insights and advice that may help you align your education with your career goals more effectively. Networking with individuals who have already achieved success in your desired field can provide valuable perspectives and potentially open doors to new opportunities.

There are a few things to consider here. First, is whether your long term career or your continued education is something that you are passionate about or interested in. Dependent on which of these appeals to you, that may be the path to follow. Take a step back to evaluate both. I would also encourage you to find a mentor or someone you trust to discuss options with. It would also be beneficial to reach out to connections that pursued higher education or didn't to see how it impacted their career. Talking to someone that is currently in the role you are pursuing is another great way to find out if there is some way to implement the knowledge from the continued education in that role or if that education makes sense to that specific role.

Expanding your professional network can be a valuable source of guidance when aligning your education with your career goals. Attend industry events, workshops, or conferences where you can connect with professionals who have achieved success in your desired field. Engage in meaningful conversations and express your career aspirations to seek advice and recommendations. Asking for guidance as you need to pívot us critical. Often times, we are like fish in water and don’t realize the water around us. Meaning, we often times can’t see our open capacities and others can help us see them.

For there to be outside the box thinking, you need to be outside the box. The more diverse your learning experience is, along with your work experience, the more you can bring it back to your current job or your future job. How one does something doesn't necessarily mean you have to do it that way. The same goes with any company you are part of, another company would do it different, in their own way! Don't limit yourself with niche focus.

One time at work, I found myself in a situation where my current studies didn't directly align with my tasks. However, I realized the value of transferable skills I had acquired, such as leadership and critical thinking. In my experience, leveraging these skills proved crucial in handling unexpected challenges and contributing positively to projects. Going through Data Analytics classes, I came across numerous articles on the potential of ChatGPT to help us in our daily work tasks, from coding to writing articles. While I may decide that doing a mid-career change to Data Analytics may not fit well with my values and goals in life, I am thankful for the nudge to better incorporate the use of ChatGPT into my life, to provide an additional layer of support to help me with my writing ideation and thoughts planning. Look beyond the obvious of what you are learning, and you may realize you picked up side skills that are more useful than what you had aimed to learn initially. Your fresh eyes may be what they need to find resolution, and your education over coffee can often be more valuable than anything you learn in a classroom.

There is so much to learn, learning is not always in a classroom! We learn everyday of our lives & sometimes we have to take courage & ask for help from our peers. There is a tremendous amount of grants, courses for workplace learning as well as apprenticeships, it’s never to late to learn a new skill or change direction, trust your gut always

I spent a year upgrading and upskilling in Data Analytics. After spending hours on various learning platforms such as Coursera and LinkedIn, and taking additional classes such as BCG Business and Data Analytics class for 7 months, I discovered my passion lies in sharing my stories and others' stories. Through my freelance writing for the Singapore Psychologist magazine and the Handful of Leaves - a Buddhist blog, I am much better at working with words than numbers. It makes me re-assess my career change goals, and see how I can make good use of my learning in Data Analytics. I can say I am a much proficient ChatGPT user now, after learning more about the potential of this new AI tech! Every experience adds spice and flavor to our lives!

Although education is important. What’s equally important is the critical thinking skills you build while gaining that education. You may not be in a field that applies to what you studied, but thinking critically applies to everything.

In my experience combining real world with formal training experiences has worked well for me. I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned in a formal setting and put those lessons into action in my daily leadership role. Continual learning leads to being challenged, growth, and opportunity.

Sometimes, it is not possible to pivot as quickly as a situation might call for. When this happens, I would focus on benefitting as much as I can from the situation I am in. I trained as a lawyer, worked in different industries in varied capacities, and now work in the field of international development - and one thing that has held true for me is that no knowledge I have gained over my 2.5+ decades of schooling and working, has been useless. In this context, I'd leverage on school networks, leadership opportunities aligned with my education, and volunteering experience to build on my work profile.

I think it's possible to have a gateway to link training (new theoretical skills acquired) to our experience. So we need to identify the links between training and experience. Highlight the connections.

Define for your self what you mean by long-term career goals. If you have x years ahead, break the period in to smaller chunks, and set milestones that need to be achieved at periods y, bringing you own step closer to your x years goal. As per ITIL guiding principles, progress iteratively (with feedback) :)

The answer is in two words "keep upskilling!" Now, upskilling may or may not need to be in continuation to your current achievements. Step back one step, look for related opportunities, seek guidance if needed from experts in the genre(everyone is ready to help for a price), begin your upskilling journey!

Finish what you started! Especially if you are past the half way point. Why you might ask? Well the ability and capability of completion is the feat of success by itself! The last thing you need is a stigma of getting an incomplete to weight you down! After that completion/target is done, choose more carefully the path you guide yourself into, and dive head first into it without hesitation.

Education, Learning, Knowledge maybe interconnected to some extent however they are not the same. Education alone will not help in long term career growth. A degree may land you a job, a degree from a prestigious school with high marks may land you a high paying job but none of these can guarantee a successful career. Learning on the job, curiosity, willingness to experiment, constantly broadening your skills & knowledge matters. Take risks & explore, Experience is a key aspect that gets underplayed however super critical in growth. Education must not be with the intent of gathering degrees but with the desire to develop knowledge in the domain. Finally, nothing is more useful than being on the shop floor with people, learning realtime.

For instance, if you're studying general business administration but aspire to work in digital marketing, obtaining a certification in digital marketing tools or analytics can provide the necessary skills and credibility.
