What do you do if your employees are dissatisfied with their renewable energy careers?

Working from a Nexus perspective where in CEA for Horticulture we combine Energy & Water & Food. Doing so we make positive impact on the world. On the food supply chain with food safety by supply local fresh produce, from yearround CEA production. On the environment with among others reduced resources and highest efficiency of using water. On energy systems by connecting to sustainable sources, by using waste heat for instance and/or produce power for the grid, use heat and co2 in the CEA production by capturing co2. This integrated approach optimizes the footprint of food production and by means of smart technologies we can improve our system with sustainability and resilience. This approach is already demonstrated by #Certhon worldwide.

Like in any strategic approach, the first step is a good analysis of the issue at hand. So listening to the individuals and their concerns and perspectives does not only give a decent overview of the situation but also is a sign of respect. Once the core of the dissatisfaction is understood, further measures are to be taken. But without a proper analysis, time and effort might be wasted in the wrong direction.

First step in my view is to actively listen to your employee, a.k.a. problem description in Problem Solving terminology. A deep understanding of the issue is key to correct it properly...

You can use online surveys to get feedback anonymously. Use platforms like Google Forms or Microsoft Forms to create anonymous questionnaires. You can also program chatbots to achieve the same purpose.

The most important thing is that employees believe in the products we sell. For this, it would be interesting to create statistics, reports and graphs that reflect the energy savings that we achieve with our work and how we contribute to trying to stop climate change.

After analyzing the feedback, prioritize action items based on their impact and feasibility. Engage employees in co-creating solutions to foster a sense of ownership and empowerment. This collaborative approach ensures that interventions resonate with their needs and preferences, leading to more sustainable improvements. Additionally, provide resources and support for professional development and skill enhancement to help employees navigate their career paths within the renewable energy sector. Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and adjust strategies as needed to foster long-term satisfaction and engagement among employees.

Identify the underlying reasons for dissatisfaction among your employees, whether it's related to workload, job responsibilities, work-life balance, career advancement opportunities, compensation, company culture, or management issues. Conduct exit interviews with departing employees to gather insights into their reasons for leaving and identify areas for improvement.

Understand the cause of the dissatisfaction and think what measures can be taken in the short, medium and long term to remedy the situation. Find out if similar cases have occurred in the company in the past and what could have been done on that occasion. Get back in touch with the employee and design a plan to improve the situation.

If employees have open questions or even doubts about their positions, I see it as my responsibility to actively develop solutions and create a working environment that motivates and nurtures. First and foremost, I rely on open and honest communication. I listen and incorporate feedback directly into the further development of our corporate strategy. This not only improves morale but also strengthens commitment to our shared goals.

Additionally, consider implementing mentorship or coaching programs where experienced employees can support and guide their colleagues in navigating their careers within the renewable energy sector. These programs provide valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, skill development, and personal growth. Moreover, ensure transparent communication channels where employees can voice their concerns, share ideas, and provide feedback on organizational initiatives. Building a culture of open communication fosters trust, collaboration, and mutual respect, which are essential for addressing dissatisfaction and fostering a positive work environment.

Las energías renovables requieren de una formación multidisciplinar y de mente abierta. Quien crea que sólo con diseñar un sistema de generación es suficiente, está muy equivocado. Involucrar al empleado en las tomas de decisiones y mantenerle informado sobre el rumbo de la empresa puede ayudar a conseguir un clima favorable a su permanencia. Para el caso de las energías renovables, no debemos olvidar que el dimensionamiento del equipo debe ser adecuado a las necesidades concretas de la fase en que se encuentre el proyecto, sin perder de vista que el desarrollo de las renovable está en un momento emergente pero su crecimiento es limitado.

If you have diverse and large scale projects, another way of motivating employees is to allow them to explore other components of ongoing renewable energy projects. An example would be a bird and bat specialist momentarily exploring the stakeholder engagement specialty by focusing on familiar stakeholders such as the Wildlife Authorities and BirdLife International. Another method would be to encourage new ideas from employees.

Try finding out what exactly is the problem or what's bothering them then get to the bottom off it and get it sorted.. whatever it might be.!!!

Visual is key to have the awareness of your audience. Talk is key to make your employees feel like and valuable. If conflict appears speak it out is key to success.
