I always fancied myself as an entrepreneur. A dreamer of great dreams. Before long, I realized I could not afford my dreams. Napoleon Hill taught that there is nothing more powerful than an great idea when it is matched with someone who can sell that idea. I focused my career as a "dream-maker;" find a dreamer with the financial resources to afford his dreams. Then work to make his dreams come true. So, as a "seller of great ideas," I absorbed as much as I could from the dreamer. Listened to questions, concerns, criticisms and objections from buyers. Learned to overcome objections and sell the idea. Over time, I learned what worked and what didn't work. Gradually, I resized my own ideas that became the dreams I have achieved.

Networking means connecting with people and quite closely tied to finding a mentor. This is only made possible if you put yourself out there, but pace yourself so you sustain meaningful conversations and find your people.

I am very particular about networking. I’ve often find that being more exclusive with my time and where I show up allows me to meet exactly who I need to meet. When I first started entrepreneurship I would go to every event, but as my business grew exclusivity and only showing up to places where I was either speaking or leading worked to my advantage. Be very intentional on where you choose to show up. A very cost effective way to network is through LinkedIn- I meet about 4-5 people every single week that I schedule a virtual meeting with. So many of these initial meetings have led to clients. There’s also conferences that are more exclusive- some invite only- and those are the conferences I always figure out a way to get invited.

Look at job postings for them and see what qualifications are required. Then look at people on LI with those job titles and see what they have that you don’t. I’ve found it as an informative way to know what’s important and trends in how best to market the capabilities I already have.

I would ask myself why I thought my skills were lacking before doing anything. Is it a self worth, confidence or comparison issue rather than a skill issue???
