Coaching sessions can never be preplanned. There is always need for the deep analysis of the current situation and challenge that the client faces. To make client get impactful insights, the assessment of client's need and asking powerful and open ended questions is very much important. This helps coachee think out of the box and uncover the layers of his hidden talent to perform exceptionally.

TIP - Embrace the versatility of your roles as an executive coach. Navigating the diverse needs of your clients means seamlessly switching between roles—whether it's coaching, mentoring, or offering direct advice. Recognize the moments when practical insights are necessary and momentarily step into a more advisory or mentoring role to provide the specific guidance requested. After addressing their immediate needs, smoothly transition back to your primary role as a coach. This flexibility not only enriches your client's experience but also ensures they receive comprehensive support, blending broad perspective development with targeted advice when needed.

It's important to understand your clients needs so you can tailor how you would like to approach coaching with them. You want to make sure their goals are clear and you are able to help them get there. Everyone is extremely busy so your job is to help them find some clarity. Knowing the right questions to ask is key so your client can engage in looking within themselves to see what behaviors and decisions are impacting them in their job or personal life. Then creating an action plan of strategies that will help them achieve their goals with accountability. Never do the work for them. Then you can both monitor the work they are doing, the successes they are having, and the areas where they could improve. Accountability will be key!

Starts with a deep understanding of WHY. Why your needs, aspirations, and career goals are important Once you have a clear picture, leverage the power of career branding to craft a compelling personal narrative that showcases your unique value proposition. We then move on to setting specific, measurable objectives using my proven intentionality methods. Collaborating with clients to define clear, achievable goals aligned with their professional growth and organizational needs. Utilize the SMART criteria to ensure goals are well-defined and trackable. Objectives should challenge the client, fostering development while remaining attainable. Prioritize goals based on impact and urgency, and create a roadmap with milestones for progress monitoring. Clear objectives guide the coaching process, providing direction and motivation, and facilitating measurable outcomes and accountability.

Ensure your goals are aligned with your personal brand and supported by a clear action plan. Goals without intention, action plans and behaviours to support them are just dreams and will set you up for disappointment

Use a mix of psychometric assessments, 360-degree feedback, and performance metrics to gain insights into a client’s strengths, areas for improvement, and leadership style. Implement goal-tracking software and project management tools to monitor progress and maintain accountability. Incorporate communication platforms for continuous support and feedback. These tools provide a structured framework for coaching, enabling data-driven decisions, personalized development plans, and effective tracking of achievements, ultimately contributing to the client’s growth and success.

Coaching tools are intended to help clients to reflect. Choosing the right tool can unblock the coachee to think about their own strengths, barriers and support. A good tool to start of are personality tests and value finders. They help to tailor the conversations around the client's strengths and values.

In-depth analysis always unlocks powerful insights! Dig deeper into the 'why' behind your challenges and opportunities to know where you are and if the mindset, systems and tools you are using are working towards your goals. Regular reflection is key to course correction and maintaining momentum

I would try and make the insights relatable to their existing problem, with a reference to how me or my other clients faced a similar problem and tackled them in a particular way, which can be replicated by them as well.

So many executives that I work with are just trying to keep up with the hamster wheel they are running on. There is always more to do, people are constantly interrupting them, all aspects of their life are trying to grab their attention. Before you can reflect, you need to be intentional about putting reflection time on your calendar. If it is on your calendar it will generally get done. Use calendar worship to block time that is important for YOU. Set up blocks where you cannot be interrupted and use that for mindfulness, meditation and reflection. And please, turn off all alerts on your phone. You will be amazed at how much attention you will get back. Imagine that?

Encourage clients to critically examine their experiences, decisions, and actions. Through guided questioning and dialogue, coaches prompt clients to explore their thought processes, emotional responses, and outcomes of their actions. This reflective practice deepens self-awareness, uncovers insights into personal and professional patterns, and facilitates learning from successes and setbacks. Encouraging regular reflection helps clients internalize lessons, apply new strategies more effectively, and make more informed decisions moving forward. Reflection becomes a powerful tool for continuous improvement and personal growth, integral to achieving coaching objectives and enhancing leadership capabilities.

When creating an action plan it’s important to remember that you need to manage your thoughts. We often get caught in wanting to be successful. This sometimes can look like not wanting to fail, uncertainty, or inadequacy. We think and think. We don’t take action. Sometimes we ask others for their opinion. We make decisions by committee but those ‘others’ wont necessarily have the same goals as we do. This may feel counter-intuitive but to become an action taker and gain insights we must be willing to fail. Everything that does not go your way is massive learning that we can apply to your next decision. The more you make decisions and evaluate your results the more you build your bias to action muscle and gain measurable insights.

The clarity and impact of insights often hinge on the foundation of accountability. A common challenge is that accountability structures may not be clearly defined from the outset. When conversations are intentionally directed towards accountability, clients gain profound insights. They become more aware of the consequences of their actions, which in turn illuminates the path forward for them. This approach not only enhances their personal and professional growth but also significantly boosts their decision-making and leadership capabilities. By establishing clear accountability, we pave the way for transformative insights that can guide executives to not just envision but actively achieve their goals with precision and impact.

Once goals and timelines are defined, it is important to continuously track progress against these goals. Two tools that I have found to be extremely effective are OKR’s (Objectives and Key Results) and Scorecards. OKR’s let you establish your primary OBJECTIVE and define the KEY RESULTS necessary to accomplish the OBJECTIVE. These are SMART and TIMELY. The scorecard support the OKR’s by identifying the LEADING indicators necessary to accomplish your KEY RESULTS leading to successfully accomplishing your OBJECTIVE.

In my experience, sharing insights with the client turns the coach into a teacher or a mentor at best. Clients might relate to the stories and they might even get some insights, but it is known that those learnings are less permanent compared to self realizations or exploring the insights in a more active way. If insights are going to be shared, the best way is to do so in the framework of a brainstorming and let the client decide which options they want to explore further.

Let’s make sure the foundations are strong: you need to create the right environment for insights. A safe space with the right balance of relax and tension, varying throughout the sessions. In my experience a strong tool to foster insights in the coachees is mirroring with observations: rephrasing why we heard, how we heard it (tone of voice, posture/body language), what emotions we seem to have grasped, what else did we observe and notice. This has very often allowed coachees to gain insights with long lasting effects and changes.

I'd leverage several tools to provide impactful insights for my clients. First, active listening is key. By truly understanding their challenges and goals, I can ask insightful questions that uncover hidden patterns or limiting beliefs. Next, I'd draw on data and assessments. Psychometric tests or 360-degree feedback can offer valuable perspectives on their leadership style and impact. Finally, I'd challenge assumptions and offer fresh perspectives. By gently pushing them outside their comfort zone, I can help them see situations from new angles and spark creative solutions. This combined approach helps clients gain self-awareness and develop actionable strategies for impactful change.
