What do you do if your motivational speech lacks creativity?

Choose stories that reflect universal truths or challenges your audience can relate to. This could be a personal experience that taught you a valuable lesson or a historical anecdote that illustrates your point. The best stories evoke emotions. Whether it’s inspiration, empathy, or joy, make sure your story touches the hearts of your listeners, making them feel connected to your message. Every story should have a clear point that ties back to the overall theme of your speech. This ensures that your storytelling enhances your message rather than detracting from it.

Drawing from experience and being vulnerable are two of the major tools that I incorporate into every motivational speech. When you share what is possible for people to accomplish with you in the moment and then have them respond to you in an excited and inspired way, you've hit the mark.

Tell a personal story that relates to the topic. It will build intimacy and rapport with the audience. This will generally be more engaging than statistics or descriptions.

Additionally, finding some historical examples of the type of struggle you are speaking about that was overcome and then relating it to the current topic while finding a personal thread to tie it together can further enhance the motivational aspect of the speech. Engaging with the audience directly to find people in the here and now that identify with the topic and can actively become part of the motivation can be contagious in the room and get people excited that forward momentum is possible, thus being motivational.

In my experience I have spoken to a number of groups from different backgrounds. I have incorporated my personal experiences to connect with thr group. This allows vulnerablility and truth to a speech. It is hard but it paya off in the end because you are able to be your authentic self.

Metaphors, witticism and common sense weaved through the topic, especially ones from older generations create interest and are still topical in some cases. There’s a good one to use when you have a stridently opposed opinion, can’t come to a compromise- and which was used by my mother frequently to her ten children. “If you don’t know, no explanation is possible; if you do know, no explanation is necessary.”

"Impossible you say? Nothing's impossible in the circus" For twelve year I've been the artistic director of my own circus festival. And the circus has an abundance of metaphors and lessons from the circus I still use in many of my presentations: Taking calculated risk, the absolute trust acrobats need to work together, stretching your boundaries via trial and error is worthwhile if you have the final trick/purpose in mind, alone you might go faster but together you come further, juggling responsibilities etc. If you think about your area of expertise which lessons and metaphors, which visual examples can you use to convey your message?

Truth be told, you can not be champion at all time. You can't always be the white lion in the zoo. You have always catch audience attention. You can't overshadow the crowd at all time and the reason for this is that, you're tired. You need time to oil and coil your stress and come up with something meaningfull. Just like every other professions outside there, public speaking is not exempted from speech diagnosis. Whenever you discover that your speak is no longer juicy to your followers or listener there you need to take a break then come back stronger and better instead of pushing hard to ensure quick stability. Before using your senses to illustrate your points, try waking up your 5 senses before you deliver your speeches to bring you into an alert and present state of mind. Your personal sensory awareness will be a reminder to incorporate the senses into your stories and allure your audiences to be in the moment with you.

I’m in Hawai’i so I’ll go outside into nature either by a stream or the ocean to get grounded. That inspires me to reflect and go within. Also, listening to music that I love to generates ideas and dancing 💃🏻

I heard a speech at a Toastmaster session, where the speaker did a description speech and she was narrating her dream, she made us a part of that dream, we could hear the birds chirping, we could smell the fresh grass, we could see the trees and the butterflies on them... it was a treat to the senses!

I can't say this enough. Step on stage preparing to improvise. Prepare to improvise. Prepare to improvise. Prepare to improvise. It sounds like a contradiction, but it's not. When you step on stage knowing you're prepared to change course, you will be more relaxed. That can make all the difference.

People do not want to just listen. They like to be interactive specially if you are unknown to the audience. Best way to get their attention is to interact with them . Get them to tell their story and add your similar experience and out comes .

I think that you just have to own it and then run with it. The crowd will let you know if you have them. Often times I’ll say something like “listen, I’ve been where you are, on that side of the room. We will get through this together”. I find that is the most direct approach and what usually helps me out.

When I start with any presentation, I start with audience interaction. Asking simple questions close to the topic. Asking the audience to raise their hands, or respond with their voice. In this way, we immediately bond, and the 'forth wall' has disappeared. It's a LIVE art-form, therefore, the audience and speaker/presenter need to connect with one-another. And 90% of the time I step of stage to ask a question IN the audience, which also works great.

In my experience, asking the audience questions, requesting them to pause and think about a moving point further strengthens the connection between you and your audience.

Before you do your motivational speech, it is important to know your audience. You can find that out from those who bring you in to speak. I also quickly scan the audience before I get in front of them. Is it all women? All baby boomers? All Latinas? All accountants? Shape your presentation to your audience. Try not to have a canned speech because each audience is different and wants to hear a presentation that speaks to them. Most of my motivational speeches are not alike because I want the audience to hear something fresh and new.

You must be able to read the room, get into the listener's head, and adjust accordingly. Maybe another one of my stories or examples will be better than the one I planned. Change it! It is like a dance—we move back and forth, side to side. If the music changes, the dance changes, just like a speech. Don’t be stuck thinking you can only do one thing. Stay on your toes and be flexible, just like in life.

Don't be overly harsh with self criticism. I have gotten off stage and thought I did terrible. Yet the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. The reverse is true too. Sometimes I have little positive feedback when I thought I aced it on stage. How the audience receives your message is the marker of success.

Get the audience's attention immediately. They're going right back to playing with their cellphones otherwise. Your opening line should be rehearsed and enticing, drawing the attention. Combine that with some kind of sensory "shock" which could be as simple as raising your voice, changing the lighting, a stunning visual, etc. Too many speakers waste their opening giving thank yous and explaining who they are and why they're there. Save your thanks for your ending and ditch the explanations.

If you have access to a chatbot like ChatGPT or other Generative AI tools, use them to your advantage: - Ask it for examples of creative speeches on your topic - Input your speech and ask for feedback on how to make it more creative, or where you might engage the audience more You can also go analog: read your speech to a friend and solicit feedback about where the speech seems to lag. A second pair of eyes (whether AI or human) will help you identify gaps and areas for creative improvement.
