What do you do if your salary offer in Higher Education is lower than expected?

In practice one should be a reflective practitioner. The same applies in consideration of a salary. It is important to understand why the offer is lower than anticipated. Is it because of the interview style? Is it because of unawareness of training needs? Is it because the employer is not a proper fit? There are numerous factors to consider. In my career, I often consider what I need to do to become and remain competitive. I identify my own areas of weakness and deficiency and then work towards improving these areas. This has led to higher salary offers over the years.

I often say to people that only you can promote you. In effect no one is better than arguing your case than you and not a representative of you. It is important to showcase your worth in terms of: 1. What you bring to the table 2. What value you can add to the organisation 3. What makes your career unique and worth considering 4. How does your ethical core and personality contribute to your worth 5. Having confidence, via evidence and not self exaggeration, to showcase your skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience 6. What value you add to your region or country within which the organization operates 7. How you add value to the improvement of society These are some suggestions for demonstrating worth.

It's crucial to meticulously prepare your case. Start by compiling a comprehensive portfolio of your professional accomplishments, including any relevant academic achievements, awards, recognitions, and instances of peer-reviewed publications. If applicable, include competitive offers from other institutions as leverage. Craft a persuasive narrative that underscores your unique value to the institution, emphasizing how your expertise and achievements directly contribute to advancing the institution's strategic goals and enhancing its academic standing. Demonstrating your potential to secure grants, contribute to high-impact research, and elevate the institution's profile will significantly bolster your argument for a salary increase.

These are some of my recommendations for dialogue based on my own experience: 1. Be respectful 2. Be open minded and listen to the employer's viewpoint 3. Argue your case using facts and not embellishments 4. Present your case from a business perspective and not just a personal perspective 5. Present evidence such as positive appraisals, gratitude emails and actions which created positive impact. 6. Employers know why you desire a particular salary so enquire about salary bands and the potential for annual increases based on performance 7. Examine the potential for growth and salary increase in the future. In other words look at the bigger picture. You may plateau now but escalate in the future.

This approach not only shows your understanding of negotiation nuances but also your commitment to a collaborative resolution that supports your professional aspirations.

Having a Plan B is crucial if salary negotiations stall. Assess whether the initial offer is acceptable or if it's better to seek opportunities elsewhere. Declining may open doors to more favorable positions in the future. If you choose to accept, ensure there are agreed-upon milestones for salary reviews and performance evaluations, establishing a clear trajectory for future compensation increases aligned with your contributions. This approach maintains your career progression and financial goals in focus, even when immediate negotiations don't yield the desired outcome.
