What do you do if your team dynamics are hindering your chances of promotion?

"Team dynamics that are affecting your chances of promotion"? Since when we steer the Team in a way that we can achieve our personal goals? It is not about "me", it is about "us", our common objective and the success of the project. If, as a leader, I find myself stuck in a position, chances are that I might have to re-evaluate my performances. I might actually be the one who needs to change in order for the Team to grow, not viceversa.

Establish a culture within your team that values and encourages feedback. Encourage open dialogue where team members feel comfortable providing and receiving constructive criticism.

This is a great question, and my initial reaction was - "It's not about me, so don't make it about me and what I want." However, when you are working on your personal goals, and those goals include promotion or increased influence, as long as you are pursuing it for the right reasons, then you should ABSOLUTELY be driven to climb higher. But here is the catch 22 - As a leader you ARE your team. If your team is not working, you have to OWN that. If you OWN that, then you have to break down the disfunction. I believe that fixing the team up will make the promotion (when it does happen) sweeter and well deserved. And you can celebrate together. Plus I believe you should want to leave a team better than when you joined it ;)

If you are a leader of the team, then you have to look at the following areas: 1. what type of example am I. 2. Is my example encouraging growth and collaboration 2. Am I fostering an environment that will help everyone accomplish their goals. 3. Do I listen to my team-mates as they will tell me how to help them.

Provide access to training programs, workshops, and resources that support skill enhancement and personal growth. By investing in your team's professional development, you not only empower them to excel in their roles but also demonstrate your commitment to their success.

Demonstrate the behaviors and values you wish to see in your team members. Act with integrity, accountability, and professionalism in all your interactions. By modeling positive leadership traits, you inspire trust, respect, and loyalty among your team.

Good advice, Jackie! I also find that opportunities come to those who seek them out. If you want more responsibility, you need to ask for it.

While these are important, mentorship is so important, regardless of position or industry. However, team dynamics can make or break your entire organization; if the leadership is ineffective, the team can’t be successful. But, if personal promotion is paramount to an individual, the team is bound to fail.
