What do you do if your team is resistant to implementing Agile Methodologies?

Em minha experiência com projetos de dados, falando de alguns anos passados, a resistência estava no fato de não conseguirmos mudar nosso mindset e ver novas possibilidades de fazer. Implementávamos grandes projetos de dados em cascata e havia muita “dificuldade” de pensarmos fora da caixa. Todos nós, o time! Assim, percebo que o ponto central da resistência muitas vezes é o próprio desconhecimento: convidar o time a pensar e discutir ideias, instigar a inovação, permitir o erro, buscar cases de sucesso e tentar trazer para a realidade do seu projeto, experimentar, falhar, adequar, sempre rapidamente! Num "estalo" mudamos e passamos a entender que, mesmo não estando 100% pronto, uma fração da solução já poderia ser muito útil ao negócio!

Change often presents challenges, and it’s entirely natural for people to resist it. However, by proactively addressing concerns, actively involving the team, offering support, and celebrating achievements, we can gradually break down resistance barriers. These steps pave the way for a smoother transition to Agile methodologies.

Most engineers believe that Agile is just for software development. For some, even the word automation is enough to make them avoid believing it will make them lose their jobs. Sometimes, explaining Agile suggests a solution to all problems, which is not the best way, especially when this cultural shift can take multiple years to reach sufficient maturity. Silo mentality, excessive processes, and fear of failing can potentially hinder the adoption of more efficient ways of working.

People want assurance, peace of mind, and access to the right information. We must ensure we include everyone and make them part of this change. The more involved we are, the more engaged we become. With a leader who can bring a vision to the rest of the community, there might be light ahead of the tunnel.

J'essaye de partir au maximum du factuel. L'agilité n'est pas un objectif, mais un moyen. Donc j'essaye déjà de comprendre l'objectif du management. Pourquoi veut-on devenir agiles ? Ensuite j'essaye de comprendre pourquoi les gens sont réticents. Ils le sont souvent pour des raisons non liées à l'agilité. Je pars de l'objectif du management d'une part, et des soucis des managés de l'autre pour voir comment faire converger les deux.

So rather than "forcing" them to follow us, we establish a community that will build curiosity and will attract them to be involved in the agile implementation. This will cause viral in the organization and eventually become a trend to be followed.

Provide the team with autonomy to participate in decision-making and planning related to Agile adoption. Encourage them to take ownership of the transition process and contribute their ideas and suggestions for improvement. Allow team members to choose their roles, tasks, and goals within the Agile team based on their strengths, interests, and expertise. Providing flexibility empowers individuals to contribute effectively and increases their sense of responsibility towards achieving team objectives. By involving the team in decision-making and planning, you can enhance their engagement, commitment, and motivation towards Agile adoption. Encourage open communication and collaboration to foster a supportive and inclusive environment

This is where delegating effectively will pay off. Autonomy is sometimes implemented, probably with the best intentions, but inefficiently. We need to support them and give them the time, space, and tools to facilitate the process.

To overcome resistance to Agile methodologies, take the team on a journey by providing comprehensive education, fostering transparency, encouraging collaboration, starting small with pilot projects, remaining flexible, offering ongoing support, and celebrating successes. This will 'sell' the benefits of Agile to your team. Drawing from my experience as an Agile transformer, this approach builds trust, addresses concerns, and gradually transitions the team towards embracing Agile practices for improved productivity and outcomes.

By allowing them to design a project using the Agile method, I believe they will be more readily able to adopt it. Getting people to join in planning a surprise party makes them more excited for the event. Similarly, involving your team in the Agile implementation process can make them feel valued and part of the journey, not just passengers.

I would then introduce Agile concepts gradually, starting with the most relatable practices that align with our current workflows (perfect is the enemy of good). Hands-on workshops and real-life examples demonstrating Agile's benefits can be very effective. Additionally, I'd identify Agile champions within the team to help foster a more receptive environment. Continuous support and celebrating small wins are key to building confidence in the new methodology.

Experimentation and Innovation: Encourage a culture of experimentation and innovation by celebrating teams that take risks and try new approaches, even if they don't always succeed. Changing habits takes time. It's like trying to get fit. You won't see results overnight, but with patience and consistent effort, the benefits become clear. Similarly, adopting Agile practices requires patience and persistence from everyone involved.

Patience is recommended; allow everyone to embrace the change at their own pace. Sometimes it's best to have a group that really embraces and demonstrates how things look like in the Agile world. If it's complemented with solving problems that benefit all, people will start seeing the benefits of walking the new path.

Si les équipes sont réticentes à mettre en place une approche agile dans leur gestion de projet, c'est qu'ils sont moins malins que le management qui ne souhaite que leur bonheur et leur simplifier la vie ! Être agile n'est-il pas la solution à tous les problèmes ? N'est-ce pas le but ultime de toute organisation ? Alors, le plus simple est de pas laisser le choix. Pour leur propre bien ! Évidemment

Any change takes time. To manage expectations, don't mention that we will be better with Agile, but rather how using some of the practices can benefit the overall performance of the team or business.

NOT EVERYONE IS COACHABLE. There are those who just do not want to change. They are happy in the comfort zone. Whatever we do, they just do not want to get involved with. In that case, an experience scrum master must have 1-on-1 discussion to figure out how to deal with this situation. We can assign her/him to another project or locate in another department. Just be realistic.
