As you move up the cybersecurity ladder .. knowing what to prioritize becomes increasingly crucial. You have finite time and resources and this is where risk management skills come into play Always focus on those tasks that give the most return on your security investment and delegate the other ones to people within your team ( if you have ) if you have still getting swamped then there is a problem with task allocation then you should escalate to the CISO

There are 24 hours in a day and too many things to do. People often struggle with this and try to achieve unrealistic goals. You can always try to be better at what you do, to do more, to put more effort into everything. But there is a limit to how much you can do without losing sleep or neglecting your own well-being. Make sure you know which tasks to prioritize and do so. Be sure to communicate these priorities and allow others to provide feedback. In my opinion, it is easier to deliberately not do something in order to prioritize something else than to do everything mediocrely and think about how well you could have done it.

When you're neck-deep in cybersecurity chaos, with the clock ticking louder by the minute, crack open your toolkit and dive into automation. Let tech do the heavy lifting. Got routine tasks? Couldn’t agree more that you should prioritize tasks based on the risk-based approach. However, what’s more important is how you derived your risks or the risk methodology used. It has to be based on some proven method/approach that are supported by real evidence and facts, rather than just personal opinions or immaterial risks. Using or forcing your immaterial risks will pose greater threats/risks to your organization.

In scenarios where tasks are piling up, distinguishing between urgent and important duties is vital. Begin by evaluating the risk each task carries. For instance, implementing a security update to address a critical vulnerability should be prioritized over standard system checks. Adopting a risk-oriented strategy for task prioritization, concentrating on activities with significant implications for your organization's cybersecurity stance, enables more efficient allocation of your time and resources, guaranteeing that pivotal matters are tackled promptly.

Find a time management framework that works for you, there are dozens that can be adapted for everyday use, Pomodoro, Time Blocking or even an Eisenhower Matrix. Secondly, say No. There will always be too many projects, too many things to learn and too many deadlines if you do not learn to tell people no when you need to prioritize a critical task. Lastly we cannot truly expect the unexpected in Cybersecurity, but we can approach unexpected problems with a calm and teamwork centric attitude.

Personally what i have seen for myself and for many colleagues and seniors as well is that its not the amount of work which is causing problem rather its either no delegation or poor delegation which causes problems. You need to be good at delegation, and if you are at a senior position you have a team to work under you. you need not be doing everything hands on, rather you need to make your team work together. Also you need to train your team to work effectively and efficiently towards achieving organisational goals. Delegation is the key for a better, more participative and effective/efficient team work and timely completion of work.

For instance, if someone is particularly adept at identifying security breaches, they should spearhead initiatives in that domain. Entrusting your team with responsibilities not only boosts productivity but also cultivates a sense of collaboration. Maintain open lines of communication to guarantee alignment across the board and to ensure no task is overlooked.

Automate routine tasks with security solutions, freeing time for critical analysis of complex threats. Maintain a digital checklist to track progress and ensure nothing slips through the cracks. By optimizing initiatives through threat modeling, cybersecurity professionals can effectively manage workload and mitigate risks.

Maintaining work-life balance is easier said than done to me. However, that’s not an excuse to not trying to achieve them. In my opinion, what’s important is that the leader/supervisor to have full trust on your resources/subject matter since they are the experts in their fields. Do not try to force your own direction without solid and workable solution. This so-called power or ego based decisions always lead to creating unnecessary works that eventually impacting the so-called work-life balance.

I faced exactly this, i had taken up more then i can handle. I was running against time everywhere, at work and at home. Specially if you are married and have kids at home, its really very difficult to strike a balance. You may feel that you are doing enough but to be honest your work performance suffers and so does your personal relations. So i will strongly suggest to do an introspection, do an analysis of your professional commitments and work critically to achieve work life balance.

Balancing work and personal life was essential for sustained performance in cybersecurity. Despite deadlines, prioritizing breaks, exercise, and adequate rest was crucial. Maintaining this balance preserved mental well-being and sharpened focus, enabling more effective task handling. Recognizing the significance of holistic health, I ensured a balanced lifestyle to navigate professional responsibilities with vigor and resilience.

Don't jump to conclusions that management knows everything about your workload. I always appreciated when people came to me to let me know if a project had unrealistic deadlines or if they didn't have the resources to complete the job the way we needed it done. Be prepared, know your facts, and present the situation in 3 parts: Situation - this is the current state, Target - this is where we want to be, and Proposal - this is what it will take for us to reach the target. In a healthy organization, everyone wants to see teams succeed. Identifying weak spots and areas for improvement that will help people perform better reflects well on everyone—especially you.
