NLP is going the same way, already dominated by pre-built and paid for models. Leveraging them doesn't take much skill - you won't stand out in a rapidly saturating market.

Whilst there are many internet resources to help you, a major problem you will discover is the number written by people who don't actually know ML. I have only seen one author who has correctly explained Neural Networks, most tutors skip over the most crucial part, and to me that highlights they're posting to advertise themselves rather than to help others. Use major learning websites and take practical courses - books may well fall out of date quickly. For packages, most models are written in PyTorch (Facebook / Neural Networks) or scikit-learn. Outside of vision and language (off shoots of Neural Networks mainly), the most useful ML algorithms to become familiar with are decision trees, random forests, k-means and deep-learning.
