Summarily, a discussion on sustainability, for whatever global need(s) shall be reviewed according to the project management “SMART” principles and from three key perspectives at minimum: 1. A social 2. An economic 3. An environmental These considerations will definitely steer any truly sustainable development project in the right direction for starters.

As per my experience in under-developed countries, stakeholders consultation and educating poor masses through public hearings about the importance of sustainable future is the most important of all. No matter how deeply you assess the needs and prepare a sound strategy, if you are working in under developed areas, without stakeholders consultation it is very difficult to execute the sustainable strategies.

It's critical to understand that what might work in one market may not necessarily work in another. As someone who has spent the majority of their career in the developing world, I've seen primarily US and EU based firms try to plug-and-play solutions for Asia. These seldom work as they lack any sort of cultural or geographic nuance to be successful. Local problems require local solutions.
