If you want to be recognized as effective, you need to have empathy for the needs of the people you support, an open-minded approach to observing what problems may be occuring, adaptable to learning on the fly how to handle new applications for which you may not have training. I spent a considerable time self employed... the one key feedback I got from many with whom I interacted was that they liked my ability to come in and solve problems even in conditions where I was not professionally trained but was able to deliver quick and satisfactory resolutions to problems that could not be solved by others.
