1 Assess risks and implement policies

Another key role of an ICP is to educate and train staff and stakeholders on the best practices and standards of infection control. They provide orientation, in-service, and continuing education sessions on topics such as infection prevention and control principles, guidelines, and regulations, as well as specific infection control issues and challenges. They also collaborate with other health professionals, such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, and administrators, to promote a culture of infection control and quality improvement.

4 Research and update knowledge and skills

An ICP also needs to keep up with the latest research and developments in the field of infection control. They review and appraise the scientific literature and evidence on infection control topics, such as emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, new technologies, and best practices. They also participate in professional development activities, such as conferences, workshops, webinars, and courses, to update their knowledge and skills. They also contribute to the advancement of infection control knowledge and practice by conducting or participating in research projects or publications.

5 Consult and advise on infection control matters

An ICP also acts as a consultant and advisor on infection control matters for their facilities or organizations. They provide expert guidance and recommendations on infection control issues and questions, such as infection risk assessment, policy development, staff education, outbreak management, or quality improvement. They also liaise and communicate with internal and external stakeholders, such as infection control committees, accreditation bodies, public health agencies, or media, to share information and coordinate actions on infection control matters.
