What does a research assistant do?

A research assistant is typically one who - doesn't necessarily hold a PhD degree - is supervised by the PI - takes guidance from the expert - conduct experiments/perform tasks instructed by PI - involve in discussions, but do not develop/validate methodologies (not expected out of them)

As a research assistant in the life science field I assisted in laboratory experiments and maintenance. The big difference between an assistant and a scientist or graduate student is the level of mentorship you receive. Most assistants are paired with a more senior member who will design the project and experiments that the assistant carries out. Data analysis may be part of the assistant's tasks but often is reviewed by their mentor. Assistants may reach the level of authorship, but rarely are first authors or primary contributors, to a project.

Assisting with data collection, data management and storage. 2. Analyzing data using statistical tools and other software. 3. Writing reports and visualizing data in such a way that it is easy for a non technical reader to understand and flow with the concepts being explained. 4. In most settings, research assistants will interphase with other professional contacts and collaborators involved in the research.

As a research assistant, I have two primary roles: 1. Independent research: Here, I do research in my field and publish my findings in journals and conferences. 2. Project-based: Each lab has financed projects with certain outputs. As a research assistant, I coordinate with teams to ensure that all goals are met on time. Sometimes I have to take the lead on some tasks. My primary responsibility in this role is to serve as a project manager. Develop project plans, monitor equipment procurement, create risk management methods, and work with stakeholders and team management.

Your data wrangling skills are extremely important. You should know how to collect, organize, and analyze data. It is especially useful if you can do these things in multiple programming languages.

Second, you should have the critical thinking of knowing and distinguishing the right information compared with loads of information available Third, you should be highly motivated to to find the details in depth and share the right details.

Research Assistants need to show an interest in the field that they work in. This really helps if your personal interests align with your work interests as this means your more likely to give your all to the job. Interviews should be about getting to know the person and finding out the fit, therefore some of my better interviews felt more like a discussion rather than just answering questions. Also don't forget you need to grow as a person as well, your development helps the entire team, as well as yourself.

It's essential to proactively engage with faculty members and put yourself out there within academic circles. Start by identifying faculty whose research aligns with your interests and reach out to them, expressing your enthusiasm and outlining how your skills and background can contribute to their projects. For my first ever assistantship during my undergraduate years I had very minimal experience or skills for the specific project but my enthusiasm made up for it!

All of us know that various types of research assistants may have different tasks and responsibilities that were assigned by the supervisor to the research by the point of the assistants' abilities and interests including literature review, data gathering, using software, and conducting experiments. It does not mean that the assistants should do routine tasks and forget to learn continuously which basically makes them become experts in their field of interest and other aspects of doing research. Conclusively, CONTINOUS LEARNING is the basic key to going forward in research!
