A Sr SAP Consultant is an expert on a specific SAP solution or business process that has a deep experience not only in SAP configuration but also in the related business process. Actually he/she needs also to have a good experience in SAP methodology Activate, in order to be able to provide the necessary deliverables in project implementation. Integration among its subject matter business process and other business processes is also a necessary knowledge as a Sr professional.

A senior consultant should work independently and able to delegate tasks to adhere project timeline. Helps to collaborate between teams if needed. High technical expertise is must and bring up his/her team to able to run the show even on his/her absence. Should have thorough knowledge on Process and holistic view of a project. Helps accomplish tasks in time, solves complex problems, provide Value Add and most importantly lead by example.

When I started my career in SAP in 1998, a Sr.consultant would have had about 5 years experience in the industry in a business function prior to getting trained in SAP and then about 4-5 years experience in implementing any SAP module. Educational qualification used to be relevant to the modules of expertise (e.g. Chartered Accountant for Financials, Mechanical or Chemical engineer for PP or PM etc). Computer science or programmers used to join ABAP or Basis or NetWeaver to start with. This kind of background helps one to be SME in their core module with expertise in both business and SAP with relevant integration with other modules. In addition, one needs to be an expert in implementation methodology and project management skills.

It depends on the #SAP Product/Module/Technology. I observed that most valuable SAP consultants have techno-functional knowledge. They can do everything required in their area (module) of expertise. Have seen HCM consultants providing functional expertise as functional consultant as well as providing custom solutions by providing enhancements. In certain SAP applications like SRM, CRM etc, one need to have cross application integration knowledge like ECC, PI/PO, BI, SRM,SUS , MDM etc. which is also quite technical in nature. Maintaining Roles is partly technical and partly functional & business process knowledge. One can claim to be SME only when one gains experience and expertise in all these aspects.

First as per my opinion if any person wanted to become consultant, primarily he should be the best end user ... A successful end user only know the steps to perform in system. Additionally the person should have the business knowledge. This will enable the person to become consultant and apply his domain expertise in configuring system as well as apply the industry standards and logical sequence and legal compliance. Once he or she proved their experience then they can able to handle independently and design the system and able to configure and troubleshoot whenever needed. Periodically they should update their knowledge with latest technology Changes and upgrade themselves 👍👍👍

SAP provides different products related to ERP CRM SRM SCM area and integrates different business processes. There are 3 different types of SAP consultants. (1) Functional consultant who has combination of functional knowledge (finance, sales, purchase, marketing etc) and how to map the process in SAP (2) Development consultant who works with functional consultant and helps develop RICEFW Objects to implement custom processes (3) Technology/ BASIS consultant who manages the SAP platform on different OS/DB platforms. SAP projects also have a lifecycle of Implementation, Upgrade, Migration, Rollout and each project demands different skills with functional, Development and Basis Roles.
