Writers are creators. It doesn't matter if it's a blog post, op-ed, novel, speech, jokes for a comedian, text book or self-help guide. Writers take ideas and concepts and shape them for various platforms from social media to novels to websites to curricula. Often, writers are the unsung heroes who document life.

There are so many different types of writing - fiction, non-fiction, technical, copyediting, journalism, scripts. Each has some unique attributes and qualities, but they all have some things in common. Your writing needs to be high quality, engaging and informative. And it helps to be unique, even in the technical area. Communication is the key in writing, and if you can communicate in a manner that makes the reader want to keep reading, then you are a writer.

I think the most crucial skill for a writer is "editing". Your first draft will be a mess no (trust me). You need to refine the piece, whether you are writing an informative article about a B2B saas product, or a pop culture piece for an entertainment website. In addition to editing, research SEO skills are imperative to being a good writer. For research, go beyond Google's first page. Watch relevant videos, listen to podcasts, read journals, op-eds, and speak to experts (this adds so much value) For SEO, make sure you target the SERPs, keywords are cohesively flowing throughout the piece. After all, you want your audience to find you, right. SEO is the way to do that, so you might wanna know the basics (if not master).

Writing needs a lot of different skills and experience. Including a good understanding of your work processor and related tools. The nature of what is being written will govern what functions will need to be used in a document. For example a Project bid, brief, PID, etc, will each need to have a structured format. Whereas, a policy document may need a contents page, potentially hyperlinks, a glossary page(s), version/ change/ distribution management page(s), etc. Long technical documents may also need an index. Other tools that are important to at least certain types of writer are image (and video) capture and editing tools. Document management and document sharing tools may also be relevant at an organisational level.

You need a good base of writing skills to start. Know how grammar and punctuation work. Understand why you change paragraphs when someone knew is speaking. You need to know how to research even if your book is fiction you need to be accurate. Please don't write about Los Angeles if you don't know the area unless you have a street map to know where streets and businesses are. If you don't have a source who can help you? Search out a local guide, use Google or TripAdvisor. Always remember you are telling a story. Make it feel like one. One you can see in your mind.

There are many modalities for sharing your skills as a writer now. In addition to writing about mindfulness and mental health, I am a meditation teacher. To enhance the offerings on my blog, I have had to learn to generate images, videos, and audio recordings of meditations too. This has supported my writing because it has forced me to consider issues more deeply and think of multiple ways of delivering a message. Canva has been a huge help in this because it allows me to turn my writing into other forms of content and convert content into something new for repurposing or reuse. My point here is that writing does not only have to mean getting words on a page. It can mean a whole lot more and it can be super fun.

All writers need are an implement to put their thoughts down. So a pen and paper napkin are the minimum requirement, if nothing else is available. And the person's brain is the most important. That is the source of all ideas. After that, anything else is a bonus. In my opinion, a laptop with infinite levels of storage and backup is the ultimate tool for any writer. Of course, there are those writers who prefer to write hard copies, so there's that. As for skills: good grammar, editing skills, proofreading, good knowledge on the subject/s used in their writing and above all they need to be open to criticism and change.

When writing for a client, it's important to listen and observe. You're writing for them and it can be challenging to find and write in their voice/perspective. It may mean going out of your comfort zone, letting go of your own style and tone, crafting a persona. The reward comes when you're able to deliver a piece they resonate with, and even more so, one that their audience can connect to.

I wouldn’t say there are benefits to writing, unless you enjoy staring into abysses, typing and deleting, re-typing, deleting again, and wondering why you ever became a writer in the first place.

But what they do not know is how creativity works for writers. We go through our own process, and sometimes we experience what we call writer's block.
