What e-learning technologies are most effective for higher education?

Like most popular software, many people who think they "know" how to use a LMS are barely scratching the surface. Reviewing LMS tutorials, participating in institutional (or LMS -led) training and learning from "LMS Experts" (colleagues who know the ins and outs of the software) will help enhance the quality of your courses, learner engagement and enjoyment for all!

Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas and video conferencing tools such as Zoom have enabled seamless content delivery and interactive virtual classes. Adaptive learning platforms and AI-driven tools like Knewton offer personalized learning paths. Gamification, VR experiences, and mobile learning apps cater to diverse learning styles. Learning analytics and virtual assistants optimize the learning experience, making education more accessible, engaging, and adaptable, enhancing both teaching and learning in the digital age.

Video and audio technologies have ignited a pedagogical revolution in e-learning, redefining how knowledge is disseminated and absorbed. Through video lectures, students have the freedom to learn at their own pace, while audio content, podcasts, and webinars empower mobile, on-the-go learning. Virtual laboratories and immersive technologies like VR offer hands-on experiences in the digital realm. I agree! Using Video and Audio technology as a way for student to display their learning csn be powerful too. As we move further into the future combining content knowledge with tech skill knowledge is a great way to fuse learning for students and create expereince that can be used regardless of the field students choose for themselves in the future.

My Thesis was on gamification and digital badging as micro credentials. What gamification intervention does is create a personalized-based educational experience that allows for competency based education, opportunities for reflection and retakes, measuring progresses through a leaderboard and of course more engagement and motivation. As a instructional technologies, I use some of these features in the design of courses and my coaching of professors to meet students where they are.

Open Educational Resources (OER) provide freely accessible educational materials, reducing costs for students and promoting inclusivity. Educators can customize and share content, fostering innovation and allowing for global reach. OER's open licensing ensures flexibility and sustainability, supporting a more equitable and environmentally conscious approach to education.

All the above responses are helpful and are building blocks to the usefulness of edtech. I would venture to suggest consider a more fundamental approach. This is learning design. To illustrate, we are familiar with recipes to cook nice dishes. Yet for the many of us, in spite of following the recipe down to the letter, we see a spread of outcomes. This is your normal bell curve (grades A to F) of traditional instructional design. Learning design, on the other hand, attempts to reduce the spread of the bell curve in a more narrow spread of outcomes (like grade B+). How is this done? Via design thinking in which complex products like smart phones and software are able to achieve productivity outputs in a quality suitable framework.
