1 Assess the need for change

The first role of a change manager is to assess the need for change and the readiness of the organization to embrace it. This involves identifying the drivers, goals, and benefits of the change, as well as the potential risks, challenges, and impacts. The change manager also needs to analyze the current state of the organization and the desired future state, and define the scope and scale of the change. Based on this assessment, the change manager can develop a business case and a change strategy that aligns with the vision and objectives of the organization.

2 Engage the stakeholders

The second role of a change manager is to engage the stakeholders, who are the people who are affected by or can influence the change. The change manager needs to identify and map the stakeholders, and understand their needs, expectations, and concerns. The change manager also needs to communicate the purpose, benefits, and process of the change, and solicit feedback and input from the stakeholders. The change manager should also build and maintain relationships with the stakeholders, and address any issues or resistance that may arise.

Do this from the beginning, the moment a change has been identified. I do also believe this is not the sole responsibility of the Change manager; Rather should be driven by the Change Owner. The owner is better placed to describe the exact motivations and triggers behind the change and the tangible benefits on tranistion.

3 Design and deliver the change

The third role of a change manager is to design and deliver the change, which involves planning, executing, and monitoring the change activities. The change manager needs to create a detailed change plan that outlines the tasks, timelines, resources, and responsibilities for the change. The change manager also needs to coordinate and collaborate with the project team, the sponsors, and the change agents, who are the people who facilitate and support the change at the operational level. The change manager should also track and measure the progress and performance of the change, and report on the results and outcomes.

In an ideal small manageable enterprise yes; but typically, the change manager has little "teeth" in a wide decentralised enterprise infrastructure model. I believe, in addition to what is defined in step 3, planning around the delivery of the change is a collaborative effort between the change Manager, The Leads or System owners and the implementation teams. Once these schedules are synced, you will have a better delivery model and positive outcomes.

4 Manage the transition

The fourth role of a change manager is to manage the transition, which involves ensuring that the change is adopted and sustained by the organization. The change manager needs to provide training, coaching, and support to the employees and managers who are affected by the change, and help them develop the skills and competencies they need. The change manager also needs to reinforce the change, and celebrate and recognize the achievements and contributions of the people involved. The change manager should also evaluate the change, and identify and implement any improvements or adjustments that may be needed.

I think this is the most complex step of the change management process; Known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns, all of which will deem whether the change is successful or not. You will get a change raised and approved, but the adoption piece may need more than the buy in of the change owner and/or CAB. The team doing the implementation dependencies may not have been considered at the time of the change request; the change may have been approved without clear involvement of the implementation team's supervisors who determine workloads and priorities. the saving grace is tohave ideally covered the step 2 ( engagement) comprehensively; which in my opinion should be a step 1 & held consistent throughout the process to transition.

5 Foster a change culture

The fifth role of a change manager is to foster a change culture, which is a mindset and attitude that embraces and values change as an opportunity for growth and innovation. The change manager needs to promote and model the change vision and values, and encourage and empower the employees and managers to initiate and participate in change. The change manager also needs to create and nurture a learning environment, where feedback, reflection, and experimentation are encouraged and rewarded. The change manager should also foster a sense of ownership and accountability for the change, and inspire and motivate the people to achieve the change goals.
