What mistakes do you need to avoid when increasing your influence?

Dont take what you’ve build for granted and think that your followers will follow you no matter what you do. Don’t assume that you know your followers very well. Innovation and adaptability are key. It doesn’t mean following the wind whatever it takes you. You need to set your North Star (your values and vision) and you need to follow it. Adaptability means the how (language, tools, time…)

As an entrepreneur knowing who your audience is or ideal client takes time. Because as you work with more and more clients and engage with more and more leads you are going to become incredibly familiar with the patterns when it comes to their problems, the words they use to describe it, their biggest desires, and fears. Be patient and don't expect to knock it out of the park immediately. Pay attention to when a post does well - as in gets people reaching out or booking calls, and KEEP talking about that in different ways. Once you nail your audience messaging, you keep repeating it in different ways.

A genuinely fair question, and in my perspective, individuals would be untruthful if they claimed to have never crossed that line. While much has been discussed regarding authenticity and core values, one aspect that has proven effective in my experience is the ability to accept feedback. It's not just about fostering open dialogue but also actively listening to others' perspectives. Moreover, certain things don't require deliberate efforts; they unfold naturally, driven by their own merits and recognized when people perceive their value. Hence, some aspects are best left unmanaged, allowing them to evolve organically

Sticking to your roots and ensuring what led you to be popular. Not moving away from your core content. Being genuine and letting your audience be part of the content making process.

In increasing your influence, stay true to your niche, discipline, or professional field. Focus on your audience’s needs, providing value through relevant insights and actionable advice, while balancing self-promotion with genuine utility. Encourage input, fostering dialogues over mere monologues. Building a coalition in your field not only corroborates your assertions but also amplifies your credibility. Remember, influence grows when you’re a resource, not just a voice. This approach, rooted in my unique experiences, underscores the power of staying within your discipline while nurturing a validating community.

As a thought Leader, The priority is to add value. If your ideas or your perception does not create the effect for innovation and creation then you have to rethink what are you providing.

Do not self promote yourself or your services all the time and identify the needs of your audience to show them you care and want to build authentic relationships. Not just sell them something.

Everyone only ever wants to know "what's in it for me". So if you are not showcasing your expertise by providing content that focuses on the needs, desires, and problems of your audience, people will not engage, follow, or care about what you have to say.

From my experience, sing a step-by-step plan that doesn’t work with everyone and in every situation. Because no two people are exactly alike, have identical desires, process information the same, or have the same characteristics. In order to be truly influential, you need strategies and areas of concentration that are customized to your particular needs and support your natural talents. In order to get started being influential, you don't need to follow the same advice as everyone else. You need to take the first step and work on the behaviors that are right for YOU!

There is nothing wrong if you get impressed by someone else for what he or she is good at. But you can't be portraying for what you are not, trying to hog the limelight,. To maximize the impact and positive result, it is so crucial to be your natural self while there is no need to put up a show which can easily dent one's image

One time I shared a post about how I was feeling a bit down (as CEO of my company - an events Production Agency). I immediately received a call from a close friend fo mine saying to take down the post. In that moment I wanted to share and be vulnerable. I wanted others to know it isn't always sunshine and rainbows. However! She had a point. No one wants to hire an Event Producer/Planner who is DOWN. What I realized is that people love to be inspired. So I changed my story and told the story of how I was down and what I DID to get myself back up again. Inspire others....don't just vomit your emotions online. Be authentic, but don't necessarily just emotionally dump on your following. They don't deserve that. They deserve more from you!

Telling stories of your real life experiences is important in order for you audience to connect with you and feel like you get them. Share stories of challenges you have overcome and what you learned. Or even areas that you maybe are still working on, but from an empowered place. Never use social media as a diary or journal. Your audience will pity you and won't look to you as someone who can help them solve THEIR problems.

If you owned a brick and mortar store you would show up every day and flip the sign in the window that says "open". Well, if you are an entrepreneur who primarily sells online, then your social media is your storefront. You've got to show up and stay top of mind. Now this doesn't mean that you have to post multiple times per day or even every day. However, you need to have a regular schedule for when you post and different types of content to post. Treat your social media as a serious part of your marketing strategy and it can become an amazing pipeline for new clients and opportunities.

Every touchpoint counts. Every post or interaction with your audience matters not just for the short term (ex: Influencing a client's decision to work with you today), but it also matters for the long term (ex: Staying top of mind for a client who decides to work with you 4 months down the line). Also, your potential clients are unknowingly keeping tabs on whether you're reliable (i.e. consistent). If it comes down to choosing between a business owner who is reliably and consistently adding value versus one who isn't... It's more likely that the client will choose the former.

This shows a closed mindset on their part. They need to work on being authentic and measured in their responses. Also they need to have a process where such discussions can be taken private. Quem não mede, não gerencia. E a gestão da influência deveria ser feita por todos aqueles com objetivos de longo prazo traçados. Para cada modelo de negócio, os indicadores de desempenho são diferentes. Recomendo que você comece selecionando os 3 principais, com controle mensal. E, a partir do segundo ano, você já começa a poder comparar um histórico no mesmo período do ano anterior. A mensuração é fundamental, mas não deveria ser seu único indicador de sucesso. There is a huge piece missing... your reason for wanting to influence. What's your mission? What's the impact you want to create? Why? Why? .... why? It's much easier to avoid these mistakes when we are aligned in our own reason for trying to influence a change or behavior.

One common mistake is equating influence with positional power. While authority can compel compliance, it doesn't inspire genuine commitment. In my practice I observed leaders who leaned heavily on their titles or status, only to find their influence was superficial. Influence is not a one-way street. Leaders who only take without giving back will find their influence diminishes over time. Reciprocity is fundamental in building and sustaining influence. Finally, leaders who focus solely on increasing their influence for personal gain often end up being counterproductive. Influence should be viewed as a tool for achieving collective goals and driving positive change, not just as a means to personal success.

When increasing your influence, be careful of believing your own press. I have seen reputations go awry when egos run amok. Stick with your core values and the actions that earned your reputation, and keep showing up. That's how you can continue to build influence instead of turn defensive about it.

All marketing is testing. Don't get stuck in trying to be perfect, indecision, or inaction. Just get started on sharing your thoughts, perspective, value in whatever your area of expertise or interest is.

Overlooking Authenticity: Don't lose your true voice in pursuit of popularity. Ignoring Engagement: It's not just about numbers; engage with your audience. Neglecting Consistency: Inconsistency muddles your brand message—stay steady. Disregarding Feedback: Listen to your audience; their insights are gold. Overpromoting: Balance promotion with valuable content; don't become a walking ad. Ignoring Trends: Stay current; don't be a digital dinosaur. Being Reactive, Not Proactive: Anticipate trends; be ahead of the curve. Underestimating Visuals: Visual appeal matters; invest in quality imagery. Ignoring Analytics: Track metrics for strategy refinement. Avoiding Risks: Calculated risks can set you apart; don't fear experimentation.

🚩Considering yourself bigger than your work is the biggest red flag which you need to avoid. If you fall into this trap, your false ego will inflate causing issues in forming genuine connections. This in-turn will block collaboration, eventually causing your Thought Leadership to fade away.
