Confidence is key. Know what you want and ask for more. If you ask for less than you want and you get it reopening negotiations for even more is virtually impossible. With the advent of salary ranges being part of the job description for most technical roles, prepare for an offer between 1/3 and 2/3 of way up the given "band," and then no matter what ask for more. If you're fortunate enough to be offered the top of the band, ask for a signing bonus. Remember, unless you ask for an egregious amount, the employer is highly unlikely to pull an offer over negotiations. If you want to ask for more than a 20% increase, consider asking the employer to tier up the job description instead (e.g. from "senior" to "lead")

Don't actually do this. This is terrible advice, and it's rather unprofessional. To ask for feedback makes negotiation feel performative, which can leave a bad taste in the mouth of a new employer. If you want feedback on your approach, conduct your negotiation in a written format and ask for feedback from a neutral third party with negotiation experience. Asking the employer for feedback after negotiating with them makes you look uncertain, needy and weak. Don't start a new job on that foot.
