What are the most effective energy-saving measures for different types of facilities?

From what I've learned in the HVAC and Controls industry is that retro-commissioning is probably one of the most effective means of identifying additional energy conservation measures. There are so many systems that are set up new according to plans and specs but need additional attention due to some equipment malfunction (i.e. controls stuck open or closed) or misapplied in some fashion.

Identify root problems of ongoing symptoms. This often means addressing bad architecture. We architects have a long history of asking the mechnical engineers to make up for the sins of the architecture. We can FIX that through design - while adding real value to the property and reducing operations costs.

Some times in evaluating energy performance we will face that energy saving not match with cost saving. 'Yes we have saving in energy, but why the cost still there?' Please check the energy contract, please check how you design the indicator.

Doing a breakdown of your bill is essential to determine highest consumption systems. Based on that, you can easily determine from where you should start. Usually think about control of the system at first then replacing it with a more efficient one comes in second place.

There are many ideas to be considered for more energy efficient building: - It starts from the design/ conception stage of the building whereas the envelope of the building should be architecturally and structurally designed to be more efficient. - There are some low hanging fruits ideas like using the natural light of the sun inside the buildings during the day time , lessening the usage of the elevators and encourage using the stairs instead ( for health improvement as well) - Imposing some regulations and policies for the building occupants after conducting awareness session about energy efficiency ( There could be some rewards or any kind of facilitation for the ones who achieve the energy target figures)
