1 Understand your objectives

Before you start preparing your presentation, you need to define your objectives and goals. What are you trying to achieve with your presentation? What are the main messages you want to convey? How do you want your clients to feel and react? Your objectives should be clear, specific, and aligned with your clients' brief and budget. They should also be realistic and achievable, considering the scope and timeline of your project.

2 Choose your format

When presenting interior design concepts and solutions, you can choose from a variety of formats and methods depending on your objectives. Mood boards are visual collages that showcase the colors, textures, materials, and styles of your design, creating a general impression and mood. Floor plans draw out the layout and dimensions of the space, as well as the placement of furniture, fixtures, and accessories to show functionality and flow. Renderings are realistic images that illustrate how your design will look in the space using 3D modeling and rendering software, but they can be time-consuming and expensive to produce. Samples are physical pieces of materials, fabrics, wallpapers, paints, and accessories used in your design to show quality and texture. Models are miniature replicas made of cardboard, foam, wood or other materials to show scale and proportion. You can use one or a combination of these formats depending on your objectives, budget, and preferences. Additionally, digital tools such as slideshows, videos, animations or virtual reality can enhance your presentation to make it more interactive and engaging.

There is no “right way” of presenting your designs. Everyone will come up with their own way of presenting to their clients and style/format of communicating their designs. For myself, I present my concepts in a multitude of manners… I provide 2D Space plans that allow myself & my clients to see the layout of the overall space. In addition, I either create a PowerPoint rendering - or I create a 3D visual of the space with a rendering software. I then create a physical presentation with all the fabrics and material samples for the items I am selecting, ensuring an attractive and diverse pallet of colors, tones & textures… Finally, we walk through showrooms to see the product physically!

There is several ways to communicate our design ideas. Personally, i find really helpful 3D renderings (in addition to style moodboards and plans), because not everybody can imagine how an space will look like, and they really appreciate and get amazed by the possibility to see pictures of their future house\business.

As you have chosen your format and prepared your materials, you are ready to deliver your presentation to your clients. To make your presentation effective and memorable, plan a clear and logical structure with an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. Utilize storytelling techniques to create a narrative and connect with your clients emotionally. Express your enthusiasm and confidence in your design, and show your clients how much you care about their project. Invite feedback from them; listen attentively and respectfully to their opinions, concerns, and objections. Demonstrate that you value their input and that you are open to collaboration and compromise.

When presenting, it’s important to create presentations in multiple medias in order for your clients to best understand how all the elements of the design come together and work cohesively with one another. Digital presentations & renderings should help allow the clients imagine with the spaces will look like… while physical presentations/mood boards with materials and finishes will help the client understand how the room will feel and translate into a tangible, physical form. Each type of presentation you create should work in tandem with one another and allow for your clients to understand your design concepts clearly.

4 Evaluate your outcomes

Once you have delivered your presentation, it is important to evaluate the results and see if you have achieved your objectives. To measure success, look for signs of satisfaction, engagement, and commitment from your clients. Satisfaction indicates that they are happy with the design and trust your expertise. Engagement means that they are interested in the design and actively participate in the presentation. Commitment shows that they are ready to move forward with the design and sign the contract. You can assess these outcomes using surveys, testimonials, referrals, repeat business, or simply by observing and interpreting your clients' reactions. Evaluating outcomes can help you learn from your experience, improve your skills, and grow your business.

If clients are quiet and expressing little emotion, they are most likely not gravitating to the design presented. You must be able to self-reflect and note if you had listened correctly and met the brief. Had you listed to their needs? Or are you just trying to show off your design skill? It is important to take notes and try to make adjustments in the design plan as needed. If clients are receptive and interested in the design, it is then time to collect additional deposits and process any and all paperwork necessary. The clients should have copies of everything and can share their excitement of the design process with their friends & families!
