In my experience having a tablet in hand that allows you to give a rough idea of the concept in your head. This also allows for you to present it to other staff members who might find it hard to envision your idea(s). I used to do all of my sketches on paper, but I have found that so many people that help a production get off the ground have so many great ideas and it helps to be able to make those changes in real time. I remember loosing a draft for a production one time and I had to re-create the set design from memory and I still swear to this day that my new version was no where near that original idea.

Having such a great innovation as VR for set designing and prop placements have been crucial for larger stage productions. Sometimes we forget just how large some props are and how much room they will take up backstage. Being able to place them in reality and make clear walkways for everyone has made all of my productions more streamline. I recenly did a production with flags and hangings out of sheer fabric. The fabric was painted and could be quickly moved. It was very effective with alternative lighting and fans. Also video projections. Even those campy Christmas light star projections they show outside on houses might come in handly. Make people the set. Anyone who saw Lion King was amazed at the beauty of having people portray blades of grass, just like they did it when we were kids (but with way better design). Doing productions on an island has given me a new found appreciation for repurposing set pieces, costumes or props. With limited resources and a hefty expense to import large ticket items we resorted to recycling our set pieces and reaching out to the community to donate items they no longer needed. Sometimes you don't get those fancy high end theater budgets but the show still must go on. And I must say, I have done so much with so little, that I am now able to do pretty much anything with hardly nothing at all.

People are always getting rid of something. Often you can find sites on line, like facebook, that will list giveaways. You can also work with people at salvage stores and the Goodwill. If you are a non-profit, they will often donate donations to your cause. The best fabric score I ever got was a curtain company going out of business. hundreds of yards for free! Check the newspapers and online for liqidations, estate sales, and other salvage opportunities. Salvage secret: know the trash days for upscale communities. Go the evening before. Happy hunting!
