What are the most effective strategies for building relationships with other translators?

Engaging in translator forums, attending industry events, and collaborating on projects are effective strategies for building relationships with other translators. Additionally, you can build relationships with other translators by joining professional associations, participating in online translator communities, sharing knowledge through blogs or webinars, and networking on social media platforms like LinkedIn.

Although there are many ways to building relationships with other translators. But, in my opinion LinkedIn is a good way for that. You can send wishes to the translators on their birthdays and other special occasions, such as work anniversaries, job changes, the beginning of new endeavors, enrollment in educational programs, and the like. After that, you may indulge in chatting. In these ways you certainly will be able to develop bonding between you.

Building strong relationships with other translators has been extremely valuable in my work life. Fom my personal experience, I was able to expand it by: 1- Networking Events Most of the websites that offer translation services also establish workshops and translation-related forums and events every year, these gave me the biggest connection boost. 2- Positive Outreach The communities around most translation websites have a lot of experienced translators, and I do not hesitate to reach out to the ones I have admiration for their work, or those who specialize in areas I am interested in, so, I send a very polite and concise message expressing my admiration and interest in collaboration, and most of the time the responses are well worth it!

As linguists we are suppossedly great at communication. However, we take it for granted. Whenever I have a big translation project I know that I can rely on my "dream team" for it. We are 4 translators that maintain a Whatsapp group not only to coordinate about deliveries and deadlines but we also share resources, terminology, problems... we use it to vent out when the text gets too frustrating. Also, "sharing is caring" the more you share what you know the more you learn since when you teach something you had to researched it first. Do not be afraid to share what you know or what you do, elevate others to elevate yourself. Happy translating!

Find a platform or a community you enjoy and engage with it. If you enjoy the work of certain people, or publishers, try and engage with them in industry events, attend QA’s, sometimes even just good old writing. Networking is engaging with others. Translation not excluded.

While you join the groups , online platforms, local and international conferences make sure when you are trying to build a good relationship and maintain it you need to trust others and pay attention to small details always concentrate on listening give others your time because when you give others time they give theirs as well.

I love attending events and workshops as they expose me to different ways of work, varying ways of thinking and a lot of new approaches to this wonderful discipline. Translators can/should never stagnate, they are links in an ever growing chain, connecting all parts of the globe. They, therefore, need to understand other translators, share their knowledge and stay updated on the latest industry trends.

Joining a translation and/or interpreting association is of incredible value in building relationships with your colleagues. These associations organise conferences, social events, and CPD opportunities where you can talk to fellow translators and interpreters, sharing ideas and points of view about the profession or specific projects. It's a great way to learn, meet like-minded people, and maybe find a colleague to start a collaboration with.

In my role as a localization manager, I've found that engaging directly with project linguists fosters stronger relationships. Ensure they know how to contact you and understand communication channels. Providing guides and resources helps them verify information independently. It's crucial for companies, through their l10n managers, to value their remote linguists by offering clear, transparent guidelines and tasks, and responding promptly to inquiries. Respect for cultural differences is also vital. With a diverse team, you'll see varying communication styles: some are strictly business, others enjoy casual conversation. Observe each linguist's communication style. Avoid prying or initiating small talk unless they're comfortable.

One of the best things a translator can do, is to have another translator or linguist collaborate on a project. With the massive immigration from Lebanon, I have tried to keep some of my friends from leaving, so I started collaborating with them. It was an amazing experience seeing how they work, getting to know who can do serious work, how they perceive language and their ability to be punctual.

I think its the best way we can learn to work with people. Collaborating on projects and tasks will not only help you improve your productivity. Yet it also adds to the accuracy of your work. It also improves your ability to deal with critcism.

In localization, as in any field, asking experienced colleagues for advice is beneficial for both sides. You gain a new perspective, while your colleague practices teaching and conveying information. Additionally, I've found sharing non-confidential experiences with former colleagues to be a great way to maintain connections even after parting ways professionally. This approach helps to continue networking and growing within the industry.

If in doubt, I always contact my university professors. One in particular stands out, and although I will refrain from naming her, I can definitely say that her assistance on matters big and small was and still is invaluable.

Sharing knowledge with others is one of the best ways of building relationships, we can all learn from each other no matter the extent of experience we have.

I'd like to share a valuable lesson from my career about providing feedback, encapsulated in the "Teach-Heal-Kill" concept. "Teach" is the first step: when you notice an issue, educate your colleague on how to correct it. This can be through feedback, crafting guides, or clarifying workflows. If the issue persists, you move to "Heal." This phase involves troubleshooting, refining processes, or even overhauling workflows for clarity. Finally, if there's no improvement, "Kill" comes into play. This doesn't mean firing someone, but it does imply serious repercussions either for the staff member or the flawed process. This method emphasizes proactive responses to issues, ensuring problems are addressed with increasing intensity.

Sharing your knowledge includes sharing your work and your style. By doing this you tell other translators who you are and how valuable your work is, so whenever your name is mentioned, the quality of your work comes to mind and what follows will be "TRUST" and that is the key to success.

Sharing is caring, they say. And this is true both for others and for ourselves. If you have the opportunity, build an authentic relationship with a few close translators (one or two will do the trick) who already are (or will become) friends. This will give you the opportunity to be in direct contact with another professional you can rely on when in doubt, when you need a tip, or a second pair of eyes. Of course, this should go both ways.

Ser formador de traductores e intérpretes: si desarrollaste una especialidad muy puntual en esta industria, como por ejemplo interpretación consecutiva o locución (que son mis áreas) o traducción médica, en petróleo y gas, etc, no dudes en ofrecer cursos de capacitación para graduados, cursos de perfeccionamiento a través de asociaciones de profesionales o universidades. En mi caso, ser docente universitaria es una manera extraordinaria que tengo para conocer futuros profesionales que están muy cerca de graduarse e ingresar al mercado.

Being part of a revision club is a useful way to practice the language, discover different ways of writing /translating, and be in touch with colleagues.
