What are the most effective ways to engage community leaders in CISM interventions?

An Absolute must have. Developing community leaders into Crisis Managers works best when Emergency Managers show the impact a NIMS based Crisis Team has on quick resloution and minimalization of loss. Loss can be found in major highway or rail shutdown. Impact on distribution chains. Community partnerships with Corporate Crisis Response teams helps to develop a working relationship and fosters trust in time of crisis. I have had the pleasure of being involved in preparing our community leaders for Crisis Management and have conducted or been involved in three Full scale drills allowing us to know each other and develop trust before a major incident occurs.

Bringing in various community leaders is important in providing an opportunity for the victims of trauma to have someone they already trust to open up to. Religious leaders are usually willing to serve. Also, when you're coming into an area after an event, or after the initial wave, community leaders are helpful resources in putting th÷ir people into perspective and context, so you can begin building the relationships sooner, that are required for healing to move along.

It is only a matter of time before any community faces a critical incident that impacts it, or a significant portion of it. Leadership positions must see that their respective departments are adequately trained, equipped, and prepared for their necessary responses. The elected community leaders must not only ensure that each of their departments have updated and realistic action plans; but periodically hold a mock crisis training that bring in each department’s heads and their immediate subordinates to address that crisis. This mock training should invite other levels of governmental agencies, critical community entities (i.e.: hospitals) and non-profit organizations; for familiarity, networking, and different perspectives.
