I would say that don’t skip anything whatever you have done till now. But presentation of that is important. As part of any kind of job (small or big), we deliver something and we learn something - Important is how you are going to present that. For example - A complete technical person working in development side and now wants to change the career into Sales. Lot of people thinks it’s not possible. But there are few skills which is there as part of seniors Technical person 1) Cross functional team interaction- this is like taking to Internal customer and negotiating on technical delivery side. 2) Management interaction- equivalent to Dealing with Head of Sales of other company. Now see how you are going to present these in your resume.

One of the great ways to fight “ageism” is to keep on learning all the time. Whenever I felt that I’m not learning any more, I don’t get excited about my work I was looking for a change or I was finding additional projects in my company where I could learn something new, even if it was in addition to my normal workload. And I encourage everyone with experience to watch and learn from younger generations. I’m always finding something interesting, inspiring. It is not like only the older generation has all the answers, we can get a lot from teaming up together. One of the proudest moments in my career was when I could see my team members growing, developing their careers.

For people on a budget, or who simply cannot afford learning tools such as LinkedIn learning, check out your local work source office -every community has one-as they often have grants for on going-learning with technology, pay for certifications for in demand fields, and grants for career transition. Most people don’t know about this, but it’s a federal program that was created after the Great Depression to help people that are looking for work, wanting to up-skill in their career or interested in new career fields because theirs has become obsolete. We pay for this as taxpayers so leverage their resources.

When I thought about shifting away from marketing & advertising, I was worried about 'throwing away' that specific experience in a specific industry. But with the help of my support system and coach, I saw my experience was much more broad than I realized. I recognized my strengths and talents where more powerful than a specific skill for a specific industry. I recommend taking a broader view of those decades of experience, especially if you are considering a shift in industry.

Story tell your journey like no one else can. Ensure whomever the listener is, walks away with a clear picture of who you are and how you impact the space you are in. After all your experience is your expertise!

Finally, it’s about your attitude. If you ARE youthful in your outlook and have a forward thinking, continuous learning posture, your experience will then shine.

The biggest thing I tell my clients, both young and experienced, is the only thing you can do is show your accomplishments. If someone is ultimately going to judge you because of your age, then you probably don't want to work for them anyway.
