What are the most important active listening skills for creative problem solving?

Diving into conversations with a vibe of "let's see where this takes us" is my jam. I steer clear of preconceived notions and judgment—those creativity crushers. Stepping into the other person's shoes? Total game-changer! It's like a mental stroll in their thought park. And oh, interrupting? Nah, not my style. I've pulled some wild moves to keep that in check—like slow-mo counting to 10 before letting the words out, or my infamous "glue mouth" trick. Picture this: hand over the mouth, pretend it's glued, and voila, uninterrupted listening for 10 glorious minutes. Now, here's a nugget of wisdom: never, ever finish someone else's sentence. That's like a creativity buzzkill. These are my go-to moves for cranking up my listening skills.

”Don’t listen to reply, listen to understand” We’re taught to solve problems. The one who speaks first wins. Speaking is valuable, listening is passive. Listen to understand. And if you don’t understand, ask questions. The one who answers first and goes into solution mode isn’t the smartest person in the discussion.

A genuine desire to be in the moment and truly engage the person in front of you, without distractions or preconceived notions. It's easy to "make time" but harder to be fully engaged in that moment, at that time, with only that person. We are all distracted but we can choose to be in that moment. That's the spark for creativity.

I remember one show where one woman talked about wanting to live on a homestead because of the freedom and fresh air. Then in another clip, it showed her talking about her childhood. She was an army kid. She moved every year or so. She never felt at home and felt teased and bullied by the kids in every school.....until she spent six months living on a family friend's homestead. She felt belonging. She didn't have to deal much with mean kids. Going back to the homestead was going back to those six months as a kid. If you limited your questions to homesteading, you probably would never have learned that.

A lot of times we listen not to listen but to speak and the moment we conquer this, we are one step closer to solving the most complicated problems. The art of listening has the answer to every ‘WHY’ !

One of my favorite activities for exploring ideas is 20 answers in 20 minutes. Write the question, the problem, the opportunity across the top of a piece of paper (works better on paper, not digital). Turn off all distractions and set a timer for 20 minutes. Then until the timer dings, write bullet point solutions to the question on top. 20 min is not a lot of time so you don't have time to edit or limit yourself. Then put it in a drawer for a day. Come back and read it. You can add to it but don't edit it. Wait another day (this is important). Then read it and try to make each idea more obtainable. Finally, pick the five ideas that have the most merit (1. that is easiest, 2. obvious, 3. wildest, 4. biggest impact, 5. favorite)

- in my experience understanding the problem and finding the core reason helps one to solve problem in better way. Firstly, Finding the problem statement can help to decide what type of framework or solution is required to solve it and what set of ideas or creativity could be done.

Linus Pauling, who won two individual Nobel Prizes, was asked this question by one of his students: "How does one go about having good ideas? His answer was: “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬.” This answer has been supported by several research efforts over the last several decades. This is aligned with how design thinking works. In the ideation phase, the team will generate many ideas without judging them and listen actively to all opinions. With this openness and encouraging environment, people will start to feel more open and creative, and they will start generating more novel and innovative ideas.

One of the best ways for me it’s to brainstorm and explore different ways in solving the issues. Bring all the ideas together and see which ones are for the short term solving and long term solving but also what is fezabile and what not. The involved persons must feel they are part of the solution not part of the problem.

Open your mind to new ideas, one of the mottos I follow in life. Never shut down something you don’t know about. Learn and understand before you judge. Take in all of the options you may have at solving your problem, and when you have a plethora of roads to go down, choose the path that best aligns with your morals and judgement. When you have too many options and don’t know where to go, use the skill of collaboration to lead you towards the best desired path

It should be better understood that one problem may have a few solutions. In this situation it is fairly more time consuming to decide which solution to implement. Working environment and employers can make you come up with a quickly implemented solution however each solution may have its own long-lasting consequences. Proceeding with a well structed solution may be time consuming in the beginning but it can contribute to process improvement and optimization thus in the long run it can prevent possible problems to show up again.

The most important part in creative problem solving is the solution. Because at the end of the day what your client/workspace require is value through the creative solutions you produce. So before, while and after building a certian solution... Before: You listen for every its and bits, understand whether this will add value to the solution? or is it an overkill? While: Be creative! You don't have to stick to the plan everytime, because it doesn't work that way. Listen to anything that comes along the way of building the solution. After: This is not the time to take a break. This is where you analyze the results of the solution built and measure the forecasted result. Success? Slight Success? or Failure? No problem, Worth the try!

After pinpointing the issue, the subsequent steps include meticulous testing of potential solutions and, ultimately, implementing them in efficient phases.

In Creative Problem-Solving, the third active listening skill involves implementing solutions effectively. Listen attentively to instructions and feedback, adapting solutions based on real-world outcomes. Be flexible during implementation, considering unexpected challenges. Engage in collaborative execution, addressing conflicts constructively. Embrace an iterative feedback loop for continuous improvement. Actively involve stakeholders, ensuring solutions align with their needs. Monitor the process proactively, adjusting strategies as needed. Reflect on the impact of solutions, assessing intended outcomes and potential unintended consequences.

I think the most important lesson you gain from experience as a creative problem solver is the value of feedback. Do not be married to your initial idea for a resolution, especially if you are helping a client with a problem you have seen before. Continuously seek feedback to make sure you are creating the best solution for your current clients' needs. Although the problems you are trying to solve may seem universal, the solutions are always individual.

Active listening is essential to receiving feedback, especially briefing back. Receiving feedback should happen in three stages: 1) Giving space and attention; 2) Briefing Back - repeating what you have heard in your own words to confirm that you are understanding the feedback; and 3) Setting expectations for follow up. Briefing back is the most important because it informs you that your understanding is correct, informs the other person that they were successful in providing feedback, and makes the other person feel heard. Using this framework it is hard to take the wrong information away from feedback, builds shared understanding, and sets you up to receive more feedback in the future.

After the end of each big project/ process it is important to have lessons learned with all the parties involved and ask for feedback. What worked and what needs room for improvement. Document everything and make sure in the next phase you will consider all the topics that were on the table.

Paraphrasing helps people feel that their ideas are valid but also respected and should without any judgment involved. Paraphrasing also allows speakers to hear how their ideas are being interpreted by others and provide an opportunity to clarify or confirm to avoid misunderstanding.

One brain is (almost) always not better than multiple brains - we all tick differently, very few tick identically. Collaboration can reveal a completely different way of doing things. I would always suggest finding the person who is LEAST like you in skills to solve a technical issue, who is LEAST like you to solve an approach issue, who is LEAST like you to solve a conflict - reveal your blind spots via a proxy and you're golden.

Not only does this require almost all of the other skills listed on this list, but it also grows your communication skills as a person, expanding your mindset with new ideas, and giving you a peace of mind that others have your back. Never underestimate the strength of collaboration. This is the ultimate power to get you where you need to be in making decisions or solving problems.

Developing a mindset conducive to creative problem-solving involves listening to yourself as well as others. It’s about being aware of your own biases and assumptions, and being open to challenging them. Self-reflection and mindfulness practices can enhance this inner listening capability.

Creative problem solving requires a strongly developed sense of self. This gives you confidence and hones your creativity and intuition. Mastery of these leads to a mindset geared to creative problem solving with maturity and experience that shapes highly evolved innovation and solutions.

Really knowing the difference between hearing which is an auditory function and listening requires understanding what the words you are hearing.

Some tips from my side to people who ask no. Of people about what to do , but at the end do exactly 180° opposite. -They may know little more than you -You are not telling the complete truth about the situation -Peope you asked may sometimes involve his personal biases - You sometimes only ask those people who will definitely be answering in your favour.

Active listening is listening. Not talking. Not simply waiting for the other person to stop talking so that you can ask your next preprepared question. Listen. Pause and think about what the other person is saying. Then ask a question about it.
