What policies can universities implement to support student success?

Universities need to recognize that there are diverse needs on campus and meet those needs - meeting student needs will lead to student success (in whatever way you define it!). Hiring professionals who know how to support the holistic needs of students can be extremely beneficial. Occupational therapy professionals are experts in understanding how both physical and mental health can impact a student's ability to participate in activities important for school success (and they can work with students to overcome these challenges!). I have developed orientation and transition programs based on occupational therapy principles and see great success with the students who have participated in these programs.

Firstly, provide comprehensive academic advising and mentoring programs to guide students throughout their educational journey. Offer financial aid and scholarship opportunities to alleviate economic barriers to education. Establish proactive support services, including mental health counseling and wellness programs, to address students' holistic needs. Foster a diverse and inclusive campus environment through policies promoting equity and inclusion. Additionally, implement flexible learning options such as online courses or hybrid models to accommodate diverse learning styles and schedules. Regularly assess and adapt policies based on feedback to ensure continuous improvement in supporting student success.

I think maintaining relationships with graduates is an important and often under-tapped resource. A lack of investment in the information infrastructure for keeping in touch with graduates is a common limitation I've come across when trying to reach out for the graduate perspective.

Universities should start students off right with orientation programs. These programs include info sessions, workshops, and campus tours to help students get used to university life. They can also match students with mentors and peer support to make them feel welcome and connected. By tailoring these programs to different student groups, like international or first-generation students, universities ensure everyone feels supported from day one.

Variety is key. Traditional learning methods, whilst retaining an important role in delivering theory and core concepts to students' minds, lack that "sticky retention" in isolation and can be inefficient, because of; - Lack of engagement. - Workforce resistance. - Not always relevant. - Lacking contextual feedback. - Information overload. If you are learning something in a traditional way on day zero, within 30 days you’re down to about 20% of retention unless you’ve revisited it several times, in which case you may get the retention up to about 80%. Users learn by doing, there’s much higher engagement, and an emotional element to it as well, as it creates lasting connections. Experiential learning is valuable in this regard.

Trabalhei numa instituição que aferia constantemente o NPS (Net Promoter Score) e o E-SAT (Estudant Satisfaction Score) e, com eles, tinha um ótimo mapeamento da satisfação dos estudantes no âmbito da camada de experiência de suas jornadas acadêmicas.

Education needs to move outside the classroom box. Remaining tethered to the classroom and containing learning to only theory, conjecture, tests, and regurgitation leaves most woefully unprepared for the real world. Students need more opportunity for application, real world experiences, and diverse experiences that utilize a wide range of learning and teaching techniques.

It may not be a popular answer, but I think that academic standards need to be (generally) higher and students need to be treated like they are capable of succeeding [rather than students or others making excuses when students do poorly, making classes easier, creating classes that have no real educational value, etc.]. Education itself may be long overdue for a culture change.

The question asks about policies to implement, but I want to encourage people to also look for policies to eliminate or change. Look for obstacles or friction points for students. Create simpler, cleaner, faster experiences for students so they spend as little of their precious time on administrative matters as possible.

Lower damn tuition prices for these kids! My goodness! They have enough pressure on them. Academic guidance and support from their academic advisors and professors. Especially their professors and TA’s. My experience with professors, not good? Granted it was a long ass time ago but you, we students were a number, a social security number or a student I’d number. They didn’t give a shit about who you were. Just rinse and repeat with one student to the next. And then leave it up to some grad student who didn’t give a damn who you are and just told you to figure it out? Naww bro. All bad. That’s my opinion.,
