Every voltage regulator datasheet, be it a linear regulator or a switching type advises placing capacitors as close as possible to the pass transistor ( LDO ) or the switching transistor (buck, boost and its variants). The first thing you would need to do is looking at the converter datasheet for the minimum &/or recommended capacitor types and values. Some datasheets may have typical application circuits for common voltage outputs 12V/9V/5V/3.3V, which can be a good starting point. Some manufacturers also have simulators where you can analyze the operation with customized capacitor values. One point that can be noted is to avoid overloading on the output capacitors as too much capacitance can cause startup problems. For converters which have a very noisy load nearby, it is advisable to add a large decoupling electrolytic capacitor on the input to allow smooth operation. One example is in power distribution systems in drone electronic speed controllers.

Once I had to buy a few dozens of fan capacitors and when I brought them my colleague asked me how many of them are in working condition.
