Some scenarios that could be statistically low in occurrence, but could eventually appear can be studied and analyzed so feasible limits for these scenarios can be defined. From my experience, simulations could fail so it is best to try several scenarios and see if they correspond with the reality, and if there is the chance to contrast against a second model, that is highly recommended.

Choosing an appropriate tool for the problem is critical. As mentioned above, you may need a discrete event simulation, a systems dynamics tool, or something different. Whether you're working a project or just out to build skills, platforms like Coursera have many courses available in which you can learn specific tools. Simio is one example of a discrete event sim. There are Python packages, too, like SimPy, in which you can build your own model to simulate in the Python environment. It's also possible to build a simpler Monte Carlo simulation in Excel, something most users can easily access. If you're in the middle of a project, you could check Stack Overflow, GitHub, and similar platforms to see how people have handled similar situations.

Beyond software proficiency, analytical skills are crucial for mastering simulation in operations research. Analysis begins with understanding the problem, making assumptions, and making decisions on how you're going to represent the system through modeling. This up-front work is crucial to ensure you model the right things in the right way. Understanding the data you need to capture influences how you model and record model results. Then, once the simulation is over and you have results, applying appropriate statistical analysis will help you make sense of the data and make informed recommendations. The details will vary based on the model. In a recent project, my team used a stochastic, discrete event simulation in Python to model a scenario. Afterward, we used linear regression to explore the impact between the variables and the key metrics.
