What are the secrets to creating and keeping your writing style?

I always found composing my narrative in both first and third-person narrator's voice. As I create informative blogs and articles, presenting information in the third person helps create objective content. Applying simple words such as verbs, nouns, and adjectives makes the text comprehensible and gives a broader meaning to the context. Another strategy that enhances the quality of writing is to write concise content with multiple perspectives. Using personal experience in narrative touches a reader's heart as they come to know the inner thoughts of the author. Moreover, sensory details build an emotional bond with the story and completely immerse readers in the book.

While it is very easy to get swayed by how someone writes, my idea is to keep experimenting. None of my posts are similar to the previous one. Even if you find something similar, the mindset and perspective will be completely different. I write in first person vs. Second person conversation style; sometimes by a third person's perspective in case of news and press articles, but try to maintain the introduction - body - conclusion (with moral) format. So I ensure that I am able to address the question with which I started. The purpose of the article, and the expectations of the readers should get an adequate justification. I am formal and assertive in emails and blog posts, while friendly and casual on social media.

Adding my own writer's touch and style to every piece I write is great for branding myself. If potential clients look at my writing samples, they will see a similar flow, tone, and voice, and often structure in my stories even if they are written for different outlets and cover different topics. The more you write, the more you develop your own writing style. When I edit my stories before turning them in, I often read them aloud. This process helps me find areas of the stories that don't fit my style and then I tweak them accordingly.

Everything you write is a call to action of some kind. Every. Single. Word. So, think long and hard about, first, who you're calling to (their identities, wants, needs, interests, perspectives, capacities, histories) and second, what you're calling them for (to love, know, give, share, consider, reject, abhor, assert). Respecting deeply the former will help you hone impactfully the latter. Calibrating precisely the latter will help you target realistically the former. One is about research, analysis, and objectivity; the other is about empathy, intuition, and humility. They overlap, of course, or rather intertwine. They can frustrate and conflict. But you only get to the subtleties by knowing the singularities.

A clear understanding of your writing goals and target audience is crucial before starting to write. Defining your main message, identifying your target audience, and determining the desired action from your readers helps you tailor your writing style to communicate and connect with them effectively. Understanding your audience's tone, language, and style preferences enables you to create content that resonates with them and increases the likelihood of achieving your desired outcomes. Whether it's a casual and friendly tone for social media or a more formal and informative tone for a professional blog, adapting your writing style to meet your audience's expectations is key.

Your voice is what distinguishes you from ChatGPT. Write so that the reader won't even have to input your text into a plagiarism app to know that you wrote it.

Here's what I think (not that anyone asked for it, but democracy and free speech and all that). Everyone has a voice. Like for example, when someone calls you, and you pick up the phone, within the first 10 seconds, you know who it is, even if you don't look at the caller ID. That voice is an unique voice. It has accents and drawls and intonations, and pauses and breaks and lisps and metaphors and a million other things that give it texture. The trick is to bring that style into your writing. It's not easy of course. Nothing in this world is. But it's worth trying. This bit here, what you read just now, is my voice. And I'm pretty sure, if you scrolled through my feed, you'd find this voice again and again.

Finding your voice is the biggest step you can take up in your writing career. As a writer since school days, I used to write and read a lot. When I landed my dream job at Salesforce, I didn't stop writing. I continued to write and finally found my calling. As I help people to secure talent visas in America, I have also published my own book Unshackled. I've grown cynical about "find your voice." It's not lost or hidden - it's your voice. How would you normally communicate if we were having a conversation about this topic over coffee or cocktails? Write like that, edit to smooth it out, and make sure that you would actually enjoy reading it if someone put it in front of you. I spent years trying to "find my voice," thinking was some perfect combination of what I liked and what readers would want and what would increase engagement metrics. And maybe there is, but I couldn't find it. Once I started writing things I wanted to read, everything got better. Of course, there was also thousands and thousands of hours of practice along that journey, which helped tremendously.

Voice is anything which makes people know it's you. It can be a design language or a tone or a slang you use or a hashtag you created. But, it has to be yours. Special to you. Voice is the way you say 'hey', the way you open a conversation, your thought process. Voice is about finding your inner niche.

The secret is to keep writing. Variety not only better engages your readers, it helps your writing from becoming stale and you from feeling like you're simply going through the motions. If you're bored by how and what you write, it will come through to your readers. So, for example, if you conduct an interview with someone whose personality leaps from every sentence, consider publishing a Q&A instead of a traditional narrative profile. Let your subject's voice take the spotlight. Even with a traditional narrative, you can mix things up by starting the first paragraph with a compelling quote that sums up what the whole story is about.

Consider the tone you use in your writing. You can switch between formal, informal, humorous, or contemplative tones depending on your audience and the message you want to convey. A playful tone in one piece and a serious, reflective tone in another can showcase your versatility. Sometimes I experiment with combining elements from different genres to create a unique writing style. For example, blend fiction with non-fiction, poetry with prose, or memoir with analysis. Genre fusion can add depth and intrigue to your work. Also, try changing the narrative perspective in your writing. Switch between first-person, second-person and third-person perspectives to explore different angles of a story or idea.

To maintain reader engagement, vary your style by changing tone, experimenting with structure, exploring different genres, adjusting sentence length, shifting perspectives, using diverse vocabulary, pacing your writing differently, employing figurative language, adapting to your audience, and balancing detail. These variations ensure your writing remains fresh and suited to the specific content and audience, making it consistently engaging.

Maintaining a unique writing style is vital, but injecting variety prevents monotony. Employ diverse techniques like humor, storytelling, or metaphors to captivate your audience. Tailor your style to suit various contexts; opt for a casual tone in social media posts, and a formal one in blogs. For instance, when crafting a humorous anecdote about a kitchen mishap, your style could be light-hearted and amusing, resonating well with readers seeking entertainment. Conversely, in an analytical blog dissecting market trends, a more structured and serious tone would be appropriate, ensuring clarity and professionalism.

Reading and writing every day doesn’t necessarily mean that you must have a pile of books on your bed-side table and 3000 words ready to be penned on the same day. Read a newsletter, a couple of LinkedIn posts, a poem on social media, an excerpt from a book. Anything that brings you joy, so that you’re able to retain that piece of writing. Write yourself a note. Or perhaps send an email to your bestfriend. Sometimes it’s as simple as writing an account of your day in your mobile notes. More often than not, small steps help you cover big distances.

Assuming that you have the time and space to do so, read as widely as possible. If you're struggling to master a certain technical genre in a limited time frame, you may want to read only that genre, but when circumstances permit, it's better to read as diverse a collection of writing as you possibly can. Don't limit yourself to things that you enjoy. Read the rough and the polished, the deep and the shallow, the sacred and the profane. Find out what you resonate with and what you don't. This is the first step toward finding out why you resonate with certain things, and what may resonate with different audiences, and why.

Read. Write. Watch good movies. Listen to good songs. You don't need to read about 1000 tips and tricks to write better. When you start consuming content that brings you joy, you slowly understand the art and inculcate those little things in your writing. Experiment as much as you can. Take inspiration. Write what you read in your words. Write anything and everything. When you do all these things, your style will automatically come to you!

Three words: Be evocative, expressive, and exceptional! It’s easy to craft & follow a unique blend when you start to respect your style and not intimidated by SEO, keywords insertion, number of lines in a paragraph or any of the modern dogma. Writers who write as if they are writing it for themselves often tend to maintain their art while simultaneously drafting a compelling copy or enjoyable content. Observing people’s conversations, listening to radio, watching films and reading books can sharpen the context with the right tonality. It’s all about appealing to senses!

New words! Words are like colourful threads to weave your article into a beautiful piece. One of the best things while writing is knowing new words and implementing it in your writing. You do not have to read motivational books or novels or research papers to find new words if you come across them, stop everything and google their meaning, know their synonyms, and make sure you add these words in the right sentence.

A simple habit is to read your work aloud as this can help you catch errors and awkward phrasing that you might not notice when reading silently. It also allows you to gauge the flow and rhythm of your writing. Try putting yourself in the shoes of your target audience. Consider what they know, what they need to know and how they might interpret your words. Adjust your writing to ensure it resonates with them. You can also seek feedback from trusted individuals who can provide a fresh perspective on your work. They can offer valuable insights, identify areas for improvement, and help you refine your writing. Lastly, put aside your writing for the day and try looking at you work with fresh eyes the following day.

Editing and polishing can and should go on as you write. But sometimes extra time is your best friend. I find it often helps to put something I’ve written but not yet finished (on purpose) aside for a day or so, and then re-read it. A fresher mindset and fresher set of eyes do wonders for polishing my writing. It’s amazing how quickly I identify sentences and sections I can make even clearer and stronger. What’s especially energizing, I can quickly tweak sentences that were giving me fits.

Even the best writing can be improved through thorough editing and polishing. Editing removes errors and clarifies your message, while polishing enhances your style and engagement. While tools like spell checkers can aid the process, personal review is crucial for maintaining your unique voice and goals.

Editing helps you to read and point out mistakes. The basic difference between ai and human written content is human beings will make mistakes on the other hand give rise to gallons of writing opportunities and scope of sentences. Whereas ai is limited. So work accordingly. Edit and proofread your own content in the best way to learn and grow.

Even with a great style, editing can refine clarity and coherence. For instance, removing redundant phrases sharpens the message. Polishing elevates engagement and persuasiveness. When you're passionate about a subject, your enthusiasm comes through in your writing, making it more engaging for readers. It's okay to show vulnerability in your writing. Sharing personal experiences, challenges and even failures can make your writing relatable and create a sense of empathy.

A lot of editors, probably out of habit, remove or restructure your content according to how they like. But it shouldn’t be the case. Use your real life experience and perspective to compose, structure information accordingly. A good editor won’t suppress your voice.

I aim to connect with a broader audience, and my in-house critics, aka my family, play a crucial role. Have a family member read your work; their candid feedback is a secret sauce for enhancing your writing!

Your content your write up is absolutely your personal. That is your creation and your uniqueness. Stick to it with client's demand. Create with your inner self.

To be yourself while creating and keeping your writing style is to write continuously through the good and the bad days to please yourself, not just your manager or clients. I've felt fortunate as a writer because I can still come home from work and write regardless of the criticism and feedback from managers or clients during the day.

One thing I’ve found helpful is to try to focus in sincerity when I write - even if the content or copy is intended to generate a certain outcome, like sales. When you focus on your experience, you forget about trying to imitate other writers, which often leads to style over substance. Focus on your experiences, your emotions, and really feel out what you’re trying to say. In other words, believe in what you’re writing. This’ll prevent your writing from sounding hollow or shallow. Also don’t let fear stop you from putting words on the page. What you might find boring in terms of content might actually be really interesting to someone else in the right audience.

There is nothing wrong with changing your writing style as long as it becomes better and better. Instead of focusing on changing it, you'd better focus on refining it. Better improved than too many versions that confuse your audience. Stay true to your voice. Write everyday a little bit of something. Even journaling can help you get better at it. Consistency rather than quantity.
