There are fundamental issues with conventional inventory management theory. First, ordering and holding costs by product are difficult (if not impossible) to calculate and are by no means fixed. Secondly, the annual requirement implicitly assumes a constant demand when, in reality, this is rarely the case. Thirdly, conventional safety stocks are determined by making allowances for variations in supplier/production lead times and demand/forecast error. They do not take into account product cost. Therefore safety stocks of high-value products can be financially onerous. k-curve methodology addresses these perceived (and widely accepted) weaknesses, to become the basis for planning inventory in MRP systems.
