What are some effective ways to use active learning in language learning?

My answer to this question is aimed at childhood education. First and foremost provide play-based interactions for kids to experiment with language with teachers and other kids. Play-based teaching provides children with a safe environment to practice new skills. Keep the explicit teaching to bite-size chunks and let the children experiment with language through play!

To incoperate active learning in language learning, you could use games and simulations. This is a good way to get students involved in the lessons. Through games, students would have to apply their knowledge in order to win the game. They would try their best to remember the lessons just to win the games. Through simulations, they would be able to simulate real life situations. These are probably situations that are hard to do in realility. Teachers would also be able to gauge their students through this. They would know the student's level of proficiency in the language.

Playing games is often thought to be used exclusively with kids and teens. But my adults loves games such as snap, bingo and even Simon says! We all laugh so much, that they learn the skill much quicker.

I am always a fan of role-play situations. I think for students when they are learning from other students and seeing peers their own age acting out different scenarios. They learn better than teachers talking at students.

You could incoperate peer and group work. This would encourage cooperation and communication among the students. You could put the students in groups or pairs to do activities. For example, you could ask them to debate on a given topic. This is to see if they can work together in preparing the debate. Through this, they would be able to exchange opinions and ideas. This would help them to widen their knowledge. You could also ask them to evaluate and give feedback to each other. This can help them to better themselves.

Learning stations are a fantastic concept, but students should always work collaboratively as it not only enhances their language skills but also improves their social skills.

Absolutely! Collaborative group work & peer reviewing one another has served its many benefits in my classroom. Students thrive when given a big task as a group, where each member is still in charge of a certain task that makes up the said task. This could be story writing, for instance. Each student could be responsible for a different story element. This builds the bridge between working both independently but also collaboratively. At the end, their combined efforts produce a great final product, with consistent feedback along the way!

From my perspective, peer and group work is like a learning adventure with your friends. It's not only about completing the project, but also about building strong bonds and boosting creativity. When students work together, they can share ideas, brainstorm, and problem-solve. Plus, it's a chance for everyone to shine and contribute their unique strengths. It's a recipe for success.

Anytime students can work with other students and learn from one another is going to be a game changer in any educational setting across any grade level I think group discussions debates, presentations and general peer feedback is always great!

El Aula invertida o Flipped Classroom propone que los alumnos estudien y preparen los contenidos fuera de clase, mientras que en las aulas las tareas son más participativas. Esto puede favorecer al aprendizaje de idiomas ya que podemos enfocar el 100% de tiempo de clase en actividades donde los educandos interactúen entre si, es decir se expresen, se equivoquen, logren la soltura, etc. Fomentando el diálogo colaborativo y no la clase monótona dónde el profesor usa toda la hora cátedra para explicar teoría. Hay que tener muy en cuenta el estudio previo del grupo de alumnos para este método.

As a counselor doing guidance lessons, I used to use a flipped classroom model. I think it allows for more discussion with students with myself, and students am among themselves.

I started teaching at the elementary level. Quite often, to inject student involvement, I would let the students 'play' the teacher. They peer taught, reviewed a lesson, clarified a point to another or responded to questions from what they had learnt/researched. There were always rich discussions and classroom-wide engagement. It was so well received, even by the shy ones.

You should also use technology and online tools. Through this, you would be able to use lots of features to teach them. Certain tools enables you to include videos, images, graphs, charts and many more. This would be easier for you to explain the lessons to them. Some tools can also let you create quizzes and polls. This would be a form of formative evaluation.

They’re truly so many valuable edtech tools out there for a variety of different purposes! While I do believe in limiting screen time for students, I think that there are a lot of really valuable resources that will not only keep screen time low, but also help them get the information they need in a mode that they are used to receiving information in and today’s age

During the pandemic, this one important aspect of the effectiveness of educational technology emerged in my nation. It was an implosion in the use of technology and online platforms. After the initial acceptance phase, it was so well embraced, it became difficult to revert. Learners grow with technology and it seems unfair almost to have them without the resources in schools. It is engaging in lesson delivery, in their presentations, and in assesments.

In any situation in life, open ended questions are always the way to go! They allow our students to dive deeper into topics and start to think of more higher order thinking

I love this technique because it keeps my students engaged, sharing, they learn ways to communicate and listen to one another. I have to mention, I love this strategy because it keeps their minds and brains active and engaged with one another instead of using their devices.

Open ended questions are a great way to bring your students closer to the 'real world' where they definitely leave a beginners' level behind showing they can summarize, compare and elaborate on a topic as well as having a way richer and rewarding session for all.

One of the benefits of this method is that students can learn new words, terminology, structures and forms of language in cultural contexts etc. through their experiences in the form of dialogue and stories. Tips: Any one of these approaches can begin with subjects that are relevant to their everyday lives.

I teach science. Vocabulary and the ability to break down words is fundamental to understanding of key terminology. One of my favourite things to do is encourage students to form as many words as they can that start with a certain prefix. E.g. ‘Bio-‘ or ‘Aero-‘ … from that they can usually work out what a word means. I make it competitive so that students enjoy the challenge and aim to get the most words in the class.

Reading or commenting on pictures, is a very authentic way to improve learner’s imagination and motivate their oral and writing expressions. There is also a way we can apply this; by giving them pictures puzzle to complete then to imagine the story of the picture they have created or to describe it. Also, giving learners cards with questions words that they use’s to create questions to ask their peers or their teachers is an effective way to make dialogues.
