What are some tips for creating a consistent tone in your animation script?

Acting, performance and fine story. Avoid generic characters…. To bring characters to life, they need to be fully realized beings!

To ensure proper alignment, it is important to gather all comprehensive source materials. Based on information gathered specific guidelines are required to the scriptwriter to aid them in drafting the script. Some example guidelines may include: 1. Script Format Template: Provide a template for formatting the script, ensuring consistency in style and presentation. 2. Basic Structure: Outline the basic structure of an explainer video or any specific requirements outlined in the creative brief. 3. Animation Ideas: Be as specific as possible with animation ideas to guide the writer in visualizing the content.

Make sure each scene has a bookend! It's satisfying to your viewer when your character starts a scene with a specific goal, belief or feeling, and then those things are either supported or completely up-ended. The important thing is to address that tone in the beginning, so that when it is recalled by the end of the scene your audience has something to look forward to! Was their goal achieved, or did an obstacle appear? Was their belief affirmed, or was it challenged by another character or situation? Did the mood your character was in at the beginning improve, or worsen, and WHAT does that mean for the next scene!

The one clarification I don't see spelled out here is are we talking about an animated episode of an existing series or an animated script that's a spec original. As was taught to me long ago -- writing an episode of a tone that was already set is being a good mimic. Break it down to the stet specifics. If it's an original -- I like to figure out the character I want to be as the writer doing the descriptions, actions, and all the in-between stuff the reader will read but might never appear on screen. I like to 'write what I want to see or read' as my criteria. I'm talking to me!

The first priority in what we always look out for is relatability in the storytelling theme we are after. That shared relatability of human moments will then create a hook for people to engage in the content.

Choosing a theme ideally starts even before the design or animation process begins. Once the theme and a story are established, one can then proceed to adjust elements such as lighting, sound design, camera angles, perspectives, and more. This early determination of the theme provides a solid foundation, guiding the creative decisions throughout the design and animation process.

The theme of a script is its underlying message or central idea. It provides a unifying concept that ties the story together. Clearly defining your theme helps maintain a consistent tone by guiding character development, plot choices, and overall narrative decisions in your animation script.

Know your ending. Start with writing your ending, and work backward from there. Your character is revealed thought the decision it takes, and every decisions leads to that ending. To add dimension to your characters, demonstrate via situations, how your characters are in their professional environments (work), personal environments (home) and private environment (alone time).

It's important to write your characters as if you're trying to get to know their personal lives and how they relate to the story. Try to dive deep into their personality and know their intentions, insecurities, and even personal struggles that they have and want to overcome. Keep in mind that the story can be simple, but your characters should be complex to make it more interesting to the viewer.

The best characters in animation are ones based out of one's personal experiences. For example if you are creating a funny character being bullied in school, some examples need to be from your own experiences in school. This shall create the Rapport and connect you need with the audience. People need to feel their way into the alternate universe you are creating for them..or the human brain calls a bluff on your animae and audience connects out!

I use a formula taken from Butch Hartman who created The Fairly Oddparents and Danny Phantom. Write down your character's: strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, hobbies, goal in life, catch phrase that best describes them, and then physical attributes/abilities. When drawing, experiment with different primary shapes and proportions for the body and head. Create a description and visual that is cohesive in either order!

A scene is always portrayed from someone's point of view. Are we with a character, or are we part of the environment. Who is witnessing the action? Remember that a shot, is an illustrated version of your script. A hand held camera move is shaky, alive and light on its feet, whereas a crane shot is graceful and smooth. A crane shot could kill the thrill of an action sequence, whereas a hand held shot could be distracting during a serious dialogue scene. Every item on screen is alive. Try to match the energy of each element with the pulse of your story beat.

Things would be easier if the artist draw a rough sketch of story boarding and plan beforehand. It helps a lot by reducing the probability of repetition.

I would suggest you pick the music at the very beginning. Or at least have a strong idea of what kind of music you want to have. It will help set the tempo for your animation when you start working on it.

First up of course is really understanding your client and their target market, this will help you to clearly define the initial desired mood! 🌈 (and there are so many different possibilities of tones for different scripts!) When writing, make sure to focus on pacing, rhythm and visual descriptions. These are things that can go easily unnoticed but will make alllll the difference.

Pacing is important for any media, but in animation--especially comedy aimed at kids--it's very important to find the rhythm of your story. That can mean being mindful of rising action and slow moments, the relationship between an A plot and a B plot, and when to employ humor or keep things serious. Satisfying set-ups and payoffs are also so important for your characters, the plot, and the world you're creating, and will especially highlight your skill as a writer.

Animation requires a holistic approach. Prioritize strong storytelling through expressive character movements. Pay attention to timing, spacing, and easing to achieve smooth and natural animation. Consistency in style and attention to detail are crucial. Collaborate closely with other departments for cohesive visual storytelling. I think it’s important to look at it from an editorial perspective so you know where you are going scene to scene. Editing is an excellent tool to help any script.

I think that inspiration is an important factor - there is an abundance of resources and many wonderful animations, animated series and work from smaller artists that is often neglected. You can find amazing ideas, approaches and styles in the wildest of places. Also, reach out to the people that actually do the animation when writing scripts, especially when you are starting out - writing an awesome script for animation is never one-dimensional and it sure helps to bring all crafts to the table and be inspired by people working in the later steps of the flow. Go back and forth, try funky approaches and don't throw away the crazy ideas - oftentimes these turn out to be the best ones.
