What are some ways to coach your team to be more innovative in IT Management?

Why do you need the innovation? It's when you could no longer be productive using old methods. You will have to accept yourself - to continue with old methods will leads you to the failure, and you'll have to find the correct ways to show your team this. There are many ways, and you can implement a different one for each team because they are different. A simple example: show the team a real danger to continue the old way. Danger will makes most people start thinking very quickly. There is also a longer but more productive way - show to the team a real value what do they get with innovations. But very important - you will have to know your team so well, to be able to show them this. So the first thing is to start innovating yourself.

Dig deep below the surface and don't be satisfied with only basic and high-level information. Question the process, evaluate the outcome and visualize yourself on the receiving end to assess the value of the end result or the delivered service.

Encourage a Culture of Creativity, Foster an environment where team members feel empowered to share ideas without fear of criticism. Bring together team members with diverse backgrounds and skill sets to encourage a variety of perspectives, leading to innovative solutions. To encourage and promote experimentation, one program I developed and deployed was an "IT Think Tank," which was based on the popular "Shark Tank" tv show structure. IT team members were encouraged to bring forward their solutions to problems or opportunities they identified, and IT leadership (acting as the 'sharks') would decide which proposals merited further investment - either as a pilot/prototype, or as a full implementation. Over time, the program expanded beyond IT, and included 'guest Sharks' from other areas of business leadership. While the individual projects brought benefits on their own, the process itself was beneficial for the team on many levels.

I advocate for a culture of experimentation. It's vital to create an environment where my team feels safe to test new ideas, without fear of failure. We allocate resources and time specifically for experimentation, setting clear goals and success metrics. This approach not only sparks innovation but also fosters learning from each trial. Let's learn From Mistakes, Most of the time, mistakes have to be made before innovation can occur. The hard part is to be self-aware to a level that allows for the impartial collection and examination of said data. This is how innovation can happen faster in IT Management and small businesses.

Fostering inquisitiveness can go a long way in keeping the team motivated and engaged and look for innovative and effficient way to deliver their otherwise visibly mundane tasks. The other aspect is to encourage them to familiarise themselves with the business side of IT and how IT is enabling such critical but seemingly seamless workflows (for the outside world). That in turn nurture the feeling of accountability and its mandatory to appreciate/reward and pat on the back as often as you can to keep the feeling of belongingness switched on mostly.

To true innovative in IT, get the existing tasks so well that the group can trim down the average task in sizable period! For example, the work assignment during my old job was 10 hours shift and 4 days week; after 7 months on the job, the assigned tasks were able to be completed in 7 hours; the daily extra 3 hours was the time - how to improve the company, how to better self learning, or how to gain the way making more for both self and company!

You have to make it fun... In the definition of "fun" in the IT team. In a previous company we had "no meeting Friday afternoon.". This doesn't mean we ignored customer commitments, etc. This meant we tried to keep Friday's for innovation. Time to go down to an area in the building and experiment with STEM items, do research, get organized, etc. It was wildly successful in allowing our team members to innovate and think about things differently.
