Be your authentic self. While all the advice here is perfectly sound and I would and do follow all of it, there is nothing harder than not being yourself because of who you think you should be. Don't violate policies, but learn how to communicate them in ways that make you seem more like a person, and less like an interface to a bureaucracy that doesn't care about students. I have found students respond much better when I am authentic and talk to them like someone who is subject to policies just as they are and who has to navigate those policies just as they do.
