What are the unique skills required for a deep learning engineer compared to a software engineer?

Exploration of data is the starting point .Your model is only as good as your data similar to our life's perspective is based upon what we have experienced in the life :) . Coming back to technicalities ,as compared to Software engineering ,in DL path is not linear and you work in iterations .Data exploration ,cleaning ,visualization ->model training _> models is not good ->refine model ->clean data ->change architecture .In navigating through this non-linear path in Deep learning and AI in general ,intuition is the most important thing so that this experimental cycle is based on fundamental first principles ,rather than ad-hoc experiments . Clarity of the concepts such as information theory ,statistics , linear algebra is the key.

Also, it is much more important for deep learning specialists to have mathematical thinking skills. It is because they are working with data eventually, which requires specific skills to feel the nature of the data, special patterns in the dataset, some other statistical measurements depending on case (mean, standard deviation, chi-squared score). And this requirement creates necessity for Python and R (sometimes MATLAB) simply because they have wide range of libraries and tools to support such analytical operations.

The way problems are solved in deep learning is very different compared to software. For example if a detection model such YOLO is not properly detecting an object in the frame, it is not a simple fix as debugging the code. Everything from the model used, its hyperparameters and the dataset needs to be analyzed and optimized for the targeted outcome. A Deep Learning Engineer needs to understand the model really well and know how to tweak its settings just right. They also have to be careful about the data the model learned from. The abundance of built in libraries such as Tensorflow, Pytorch, scikit learn, nltk makes implementation of deep learning algorithms smoother and efficient. For example the newly added Ultralytics library in python language has reduced the Training and deployment of YOLO models to just a few lines of code.
