What web application security testing tools do you need to know?

To carryout a static test I feel you should know how html works. Tools come very late. You should know html.css works. Js works. Directory structuring and basic secure coding guidelines. Tools you can use once you know how websites are built

I am just sharing a few here, as there are so many; the order does not reflect the importance Zed Attack Proxy (ZAP) Burp Suite NetSparker SQLMap Nikto Nmap

For DAST: Burp Suite: widely used toolkit for web application security testing. Supports both manual and automated testing, includes tools such as a proxy, scanner, intruder, repeater, sequencer, and decoder. OWASP ZAP (Zed Attack Proxy): an open-source web application security scanner. Also offers automated scanners as well as tools for manual testing. Nuclei: is a newer open-source vulnerability scanning engine which is fast, extensible, and covers a wide range of weaknesses.

One of the big challenges of SAST tools is to give a comprehensive view of the potential vulnerabilities embedded on the source code, while not flooding developers with warnings. What developers and security experts wait for is a SAST tool that helps them prioritizing the vulnerabilities that do need fixing, without wasting their time nor delaying delivery. Such new tools as Pradeo SAST tackle this challenge and also support developers with contextual remediation samples extracted from the project code base.

Intercepting tools like Burp Suite or OWASP ZAP is a mandatory tool if I need to perform semi-automated or manual security testing activity as it will help in accessing/testing the data/traffic or request/response generated by an application dynamically. Also, we need these tools to bypass certain logic/rules which may not be possible directly from the browser. Apart from these intercepting tools, it is good to have automated scanners like WebInspect, HCL AppScan etc. to perform application security scans and find out possible vulnerabilities which can be later verified using intercepting tool and by following manual approach.

OWASP ZAP: While free and open-source, ZAP is surprisingly robust. It's a good starting point and has a strong community behind it. Burp Suite: A favourite among security pros, Burp Suite is incredibly versatile. It offers automated scanning and extensive manual testing features for those wanting to go deeper. Acunetix: A user-friendly veteran in the DAST space. It provides excellent coverage of common vulnerabilities like XSS, SQL Injection, and more. Its detailed vulnerability reporting makes remediation smoother.

There are quite a bunch of tools such as Metasploit, OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite, that have there own perimeter and great peformance. Those tools can be aggregated together to complement one another with the Knock Knock orchestrator which simplifies their deployment, reproduces pentesters behaviour and unifies reports coming from Nmap, OpenVAS, NVD-NIST, Metasploit, THC-Hydra, Proxychains, LinPEAS, WinPEAS, Bloodhound.

Nmap: The go-to for network scanning and enumeration. Burp Suite: This is the Swiss Army knife for pen-testing. Its comprehensive suite of tools includes an intercepting proxy, scanner, intruder for automated attacks, and more. Metasploit Framework: An excellent exploitation framework. It includes countless pre-built exploit modules, making it a great way to test whether a discovered vulnerability can be weaponized. Nikto: A solid web server scanner that checks for outdated software, misconfigurations, and other common vulnerabilities. John the Ripper and Hashcat: These are indispensable when it comes to password cracking. Web applications often have authentication flaws, and cracking any obtained password hashes is crucial.

Penetration testing tools are software that can perform advanced and manual attacks on web applications, and exploit the vulnerabilities that are found by static or dynamic analysis tools. Penetration testing tools can help you assess the severity and likelihood of security breaches, and provide recommendations and evidence for remediation. Penetration testing tools require a high level of skill and knowledge, and should be used with caution and permission. Some examples of penetration testing tools are Metasploit, sqlmap, and Nikto.

Whenever someone asks me for an advice about Vulnerability Scanning tools, the best thing I always like to say is that the tool you use is not half as important as the settings you use in that tool. For example, a beginner might use Nessus with default settings or minimal changes to scan a network and get very few results but the same tool could be used by expert to get a lot more results, only because of the way the tool was configured keeping in mind the specific environment you are scanning. That being said, a good tool is always a good starting point. Nessus and Nexpose are great for network vulnerability assessment whereas Burp Suite, Acunetix, Arachni and VEGA by Subgraph are some of my top choices for web application assessments!

Regular vulnerability scanning should be clearly stated in the Information Security policy. Critical and High vulnerabilities must be remediated with 7 to 30 days of identification.

Examples: ModSecurity, Imperva, F5 BIG-IP, Cloudflare WAF SIEM (Security Information and Event Management): Centralized log aggregation and analysis. SIEM correlates events across various systems, giving you the big picture. Examples: Splunk, QRadar, LogRhythm, SolarWinds Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS): These monitor network traffic and system behaviour for anomalies. IPS can take active steps to block attacks. Examples: Suricata, Snort, Cisco Firepower

As a security analyst I recommend Splunk Enterprise Security , SecurityOnion, Wazuh, ELK, Snort, Wireshark, Suricata, Zeek SolarWinds, Metasploit Nessus.

Security testing frameworks is, if not the most essential... one of the MOST essential skills I look for in a person if they want to join my penetration testing team. A more generalized framework such as PTES tells you how to approach a real penetration testing or vulnerability testing engagement whereas a more specific framework like OWASP Web Security Testing Guide tells you which tests you have to perform and exactly how! Further, when you mention to a client that you are going to use XYZ framework which is the industry standard for XYZ part of security testing, it makes the client trust you and your process much more. This is because your approach is not random, it is supported by a framework developed by some of the best experts!

Web application vulnerabilities are certainly a huge risk to any online system. When assessing risk beyond vulnerabilities consider business logic end-to-end testing. Ensure fraud or malicious use (excessive information sharing, session management, system to system communication) has also been accounted for. Many applications have been breached not because of an SQL injection or insufficient parameter checking - but by giving permissions excessively to allow enmeration.

OWASP ZAP and Burp Suits are powerful solutions to rely on, not just for testing your applications, they will also support you in getting familiar with various web application commands. It’s always good to show the context of the testing processes, and the issued commands; as this will enhance your capabilities in knowing the applications’ behavior you are protecting and securing.

Most of the times try to use OWASP WSTG Document to refer to each test case and tools can help you in performing the testing in the best way
