What I like to do with this method is kinda create that spiderweb diagram that we all saw in elementary school. Circle your main idea. Draw branches out from the main idea, write sub-ideas. Circle each idea that is imperative to the story and keep branching out into smaller ideas. Eventually, you will have everything you want to say for the book and each idea you want to present in the book, lain out before you with interconnecting branches between the ideas/circles.

I've always found a traditional outline—whether I use a template like Hero's Journey or not—to be super effective. I can start with the broad plot strokes, and then track each plot arc, character, fact reveal, and story beat throughout the outline. Helps me make sure I don't leave unintentional loose threads, that each chapter ends in a good hook, and that everything is connecting nicely. It also helps me write: I read a chapter outline before I go to bed and then write that chapter first thing the next morning. I can reliably produce solid 8k-10k a day that way, for 3-4 days a week minimum, and the results will need only a light dev edit (I actually have my dev editor go over my outline before I start, as well).

Freewriting is a necessary part of generating new ideas for me, but I would advocate pairing this method with one of the more structured outlines mentioned above. Freewriting is an incredible brainstorming tool, and can lead to surprising discoveries about your story or characters--but without structuring these insights into a clear chapter by chapter roadmap, it's easy to get lost in the middle of a plot unsure how to link two brainstormed ideas. However, it's important not to let an outline stifle your intuition. Keep your outline skeletal; focus on the big movements of the plot, and then let your intuition fill in the little moments of the story: the reflective character beats and the dialogue.

From my college days in the writing department, the Free-Writing Method comes from the technique often used by writer James Joyce. He used a method called Stream Of Consciousness..."Making the consciousness purely unconscious."
