For travel photography, I think it goes without saying that the lighter and more compact the tripod, the easier it will be to bring around. For the more conscious photographer, the more discreet, the better-- I personally don't like to stand out too much with massive lenses and large heavy-duty, higher end tripods. I would recommend a tripod that folds up into a neat little package less than 20 inches to I can stuff it in my backpack and take it out if I need it.
