Age bias in companies and individuals exist. I have no suggestions on dealing with that borderline intractable idiocy. That said, almost all, like more than 90% of the age bias I had to deal with came from job applicants who had already decided they were too old. They often were too old, just not in terms of age, just in terms of the lies they kept on telling themselves. Have you kept up with what is new in your field? Have you had a chance to use what is new? What have you done on your own in the last year to improve your professional skills? What are you expectations? If they are not met, will you be resentful? Of course you will. Expect people to be nice, be nice yourself, it goes a long way in life and interviews.

You never now when that random person you met a networking event becomes the person that turns you on to the best job ever. Asking random people you know if they heard about any openings is less effective than your network that may hear about openings at their company even though they are in a different field.
