You have a data-driven project that needs the best tools. What are your options?

There are many ways we can access our data sources. If we have a structured database, we can use SQL to enter it. For cloud databases, we can use tools like BigQuery with GCP. If the database is on the web, we can use a web scraper with BS4 to get the HTML, and if it's in JSON format, we can parse it with Python or R. We can also transform a flat file, like a .csv or Excel, into a database and upload it to GCP. Generally, accessing the database is not too complicated. The complex part is formatting the data correctly so we can use it in our analysis, dealing with strange characters, anomalous data, among other things.

Meanwhile, if dealing with streaming data, tools such as Apache Kafka, Spark, or Storm provide robust solutions.

There's many ways to access and handle the various different data sources, so try using the tools that you know best. But if they can't do it, then I love Power BI. Not only can it connect to numerous different data sources, it can also transform the data, create calculations, and amazing interactive visualisations. And there's loads of tutorial videos on YouTube! And did I say you can use the fully loaded desktop app for free!

Data errors and missing data must be replaced, of course, if we handle individual customers, their data must be handled as it is. When we have a very large dataset, what I usually do is upload the data to the cloud, specifically to Google Cloud Platform. The advantage of this is that we can perform distributed queries, so the cost will depend on the size of the query in MB, GB, or TB. We also have the flexibility to access the data from Python or R. In Python, we can use pandas_gbq, which is quite easy for making queries and saving the data in a dataframe format; we just need to have the service account. Obviously, we can use Hadoop and Spark, but as far as I'm concerned, I prefer to use cloud technologies combined with Python.

If scalability involves leveraging cloud computing resources, platforms like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure become essential.

Power BI can handle billions of rows of data, and as an Actuary I typically use Power BI over a spreadsheet. It's just better, albeit there is a learning curver to navigate, but it is worth the persistence!

Initial data analysis involves drilling into the data to understand it and spot areas of interest; areas where the numbers looks different from what you'd expect. I love Power BI for this, as it's so quick and easy to try out different visualisations and apply anlysis on different groups and sub-groups. And you can calculate what ever measures you need to get the analysis you want. And if the analysis is repeated every day/ week/ month/ quarter/ year then Power BI can automatically update the charts for the new periods - as an Actuary, this can be a real pain if doing things in Excel !!

Define your data analysis objectives and requirements, whether it's descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, or prescriptive analytics. Choose tools that offer the appropriate analytics capabilities and algorithms to derive actionable insights from your data.

When analyzing data, first define the use case and its business impact. Then, check data quality, clean anomalies, and understand variables—categorical, continuous, discrete. Use descriptive analysis and visualizations like Heatmaps for correlations. Develop the case; if a ML model is needed, scikit-learn works well. For deep learning, consider PyTorch or TensorFlow. Automate tasks by building a replicable framework for company units.
