One thing I’ve found helpful when working with donors in situations such as this, is to physically show them how their gift can change lives. I always let them know they can ask as many questions as they would like, and if they think of a question after our meeting to reach out at anytime if they have a follow up. Letting them see the mission in action and keeping communication open can do wonders!

Ask questions to understand where he/she is coming from. Seek to understand. If they truly do not believe in your mission and/or have other charities of interest, move on and wish them well!

Something that I found that works well to build trust is to be completely honest. Explain all the negatives as well as the positive. Explain to them how their money would be used to offset the negatives. This will be a way they can see a direct correlation to their input.
