Never underestimate them, we've been burned a couple of times, because the interaction between client and the team wasn't well defined, and the scope and features would often change. The project manager is the person responsible for that, and while there are best practices in the industry, each project requires unique considerations. So Kanban would work for smaller projects, while Scrum is good for better-defined processes on bigger ones. Invest in a balance of processes, rules and definitions early on, so you don't run into problems later.
