In a continuous evaluation scheme, we need a video-aided transcription service to recall and provide grades for class participation across several sessions of discussion. The regular participants get noticed. one-off contributors are left out. This is the toughest part for me.

An SIS is an electronic file cabinate available for all stake holders and influencers where all student contact details and work, etc is stored. Various levels of security allow for segmentation of what is avaialble and to whom. Indispensible.

I recommend choosing an LMS/SIS that is highly customizable and includes 21st-century learning tools that align with your system’s digital learning needs. Now more than ever, we must have LMS/SIS systems that incorporate the newest features allowing educators to operate their schools with complete efficiency. In addition, 21st-century learners expect and deserve to see AI, VR, gamification, and fully integrated systems. Many SIS/LMS systems have not kept up with the times and use antiquated systems that are less than great for our current teaching and learning environment.

A SIS should be accessible to each student or say more widely to each stakeholder of the college or university so that all the information, documents, compliances, etc. are easily accessible to process and complete. Later on, administrator should also design infights from the portal which helps them in future decision making.

Of course, custom SIS is the best option to go for if the institutions have deep pockets and as well as the capacity to maintain it in-house. While the modular one is the suitable for any typical college or university, but it comes with many limitations. Hence, if you're like ready to go type of institute, the best option for you is to choose off-the-shelf SIS which provides pre-built features which allows to use it on a daily basis.

The challenge isn't to compare systems but rather have a defined understanding of the business processes/requirements of the organization. With a formal BPA completed a gap analysis can be conducted to identify the current SIS system(s) that best meet the business requirements. The gap analysis will identify which business processes need to be modified to meet the functional capabilities of the SIS.

One can always compare any new SIS with their current versions. However, along with that, institutions should also consider the transparency, reliability and compatibility of new system with overall existing one. One should not also forget to identify the need for IT infrastructure and the technology while adopting or going for new or revised SIS.

It always depends on the institution as many options are available in the market to choose. However, one should also evaluate the available options in terms of cost, installation, improvisation and addition or removal of feature/s, capacity of maintenance, user friendliness, etc.

I highly recommend an SIS platform that has an easy-to-navigate user interface. The best system is the one that can be utilized by multiple offices and departments across the institution. It should not replace academic advisors, but the system should provide students with an easy-to-understand roadmap of their academic program. Side note: I hope future SIS platforms can integrate with the LMS systems. This will make it easier for students, faculty, and staff by simplifying the number of software applications at the institution. Institutions need to be more conscious of “login fatigue” for their users.

My higher education experience has been exclusive to Texas in the US. At the three public institutions I have worked for, we have used Ellucian Banner 8 and 9. Banner 9 was certainly an improvement on Banner 8, and overall I find the system to be adequate, with modules specifically designed to track initiatives required by Texas state law. There is also the ability for customization and data table creation; however, I will warn against overly customized environments due to the technical debt of maintenance.

Most instructors have no or little choice regarding selection of an SIS because the SIS is mandated by the school. But no matter what SIS you use at you school I recommend that you consider supplementing that data with a private SIS that is convenient, comfortable, and secure (security is critical). This gives you a second set of data in case of SIS failure at your school.
