One thing I’ve always found helpful is “visits” depending on the industry your are in - a face to face visit is always a good thing. Visit their business, talk with your customer, engage and create confidence.

The harder you make it to give feedback, the less you will get. Make it easy, timely, and simple for customers to give you feedback. Keep it basic and give them the option to expand if they want to later. For example, adding a simple hyperlink "Did we get XXXXXX correct" with a Yes/No answer option is likely enough of a first pass to most customers. After that, thank them and offer the option of expanding or being done but it's that first nugget that's the most valuable to the company and them. Plus, it may draw some in for more. Also, ask for feedback when the service is given/delivered and fresh in mind. It's too easy to delete and forget once time has passed.

If it's not easy you have no chance. Don't expect long answers. Give the chance to follow up on comments. Give the option to be anonymous.

Consider recognizing the individuals giving the feedbacks by thanking them and reporting them on the changes after it is implemented, even if it is a generic message to all customers giving similar feedbacks.

If enough energy is put without results, it's time to consider spending time to get another client. Work with companies that want to work with you.

An example I have experienced and have proven very effective is the personal relation with guests or members the old meet and greet is very effective in establishing connections and professional bonds it gives a very welcoming vibe to the guest that can make their stay very memorable not to mention the loyalty that you may establish plus referrals as well. Good communicating skills that require a friendly and genuine gesture always get results.

Something else to consider is adding value to the feedback. A customer’s time is precious, often limited and should be honored. Providing a coupon towards their next purchase, or extra loyalty rewards points might just be the extra nudge needed to get that treasured feedback.

Speaking directly with customers, eyeballs to eyeballs, in person, is several orders of magnitude superior to any remote engagement technology.
