Different scientists have opinions about the value of a protocol. A LONG time ago I did not like making protocols until I learned how bad you could screw up an experiment without a solid protocol. Over time when I started mentoring young scientist I asked them to write protocols for every experiment to make them take a step back and think about what they were doing (and make sure they have all of the reagents!!!). And, after moving into industry you realize when communicating across Networks a solid protocol is priceless!!!!
