The learning mindset has been the defining factor between a team that will achieve success or dwindle into redundancy or oblivion. In a field as dynamic as risk management where the type and complexity of risk encountered requires consistency in redefining solutions and methods to manage risk, being change ready with an open mindset to learn cannot be understated. I have however noticed that the learning mindset is always beneficial for the team if cascaded down from the team leadership and not by paying lip service. An atmosphere that encourages ideas, openness, support and experimentation of risk management solutions will definitely help foster a learning mindset.

There are different kinds of theories that are used to energized employees to remain attentive and productive in aspects of risk management i.e time value of money. If we call investment as time value of money then it my not be wrong because it involves duration of time and money is just number of cash to be invested. So, importance of time with respect to ongoing situations can be well explained to employees so that can understand the value of risk management.

I would seek to understand what the team believes risk management is and how they came about to that understanding. Oftentimes, the team’s knowledge draws from the larger corporate definition and culture related to risk management. Providing effective training, tools/methods and support should be determined thereafter. For example, if organizationally there isn’t clarity on the definition of a control and its purpose, then irrespective of the education/support provided to the team, confusion will still prevail and deter the team from opening up.
