Triage the tasks so your kanban columns fit on a screen - Technical debt is through the roof? Ring fence time to reduce it from the rest of the the dev effort - Your language doesn't match your task well? If you can't change language, analyse your problems and how to mitigate them (e.g boxing and garbage collection) - Development and test don't talk to each other? Get them pair-programming on dev tasks so that code is designed for test and tests cover the intent of the code There are tools for all of these things, but knowing the problem is more important.

To rejuvenate the team and instill a 'joie de vivre' in the team one might consider using a 'fire break'. This is a short break from the daily monotony of software development and allows developers to research areas of interest related to the latest methodologies and development tools in software development. This would help improve the engagement and motivation of the team by inculcating autonomy, mastery and purpose as highlighted in Dan Pink's book 'Drive'.

Its important to invest timely in development plans for the team. Once you are stuck it will become a bottle neck for the team. Development plans for team is equally important as development tasks.

In my experience, resources from other professionals who are actively writing code will move you ahead further and faster than many formal courses. Platforms like Medium and Stack Overflow are designed for passionate professionals to share specific experiences with their peers.

If you have an entire software dev team in a rut it tells me one of 2 things is likely: 1. The work is simply uninspiring and dull. 2. The project is taking longer than it should and the team sees no end in sight and they're tired of it. New tools are not going to fix it. If the work is dull, invest in learning for the team via a platform like Udemy, Pluralsight, or Coursera. There are tons of others, but those are popular. If the project was incorrectly scoped or hit massive scope creep along the way. Take a step back and figure it out with whoever manages the project. It won't get better. Have the team take a break rather than push, push, push.

If your team is in a rut, consider a hackathon. Curiosity and creativity are a great strategy for combating the tedium of endless grinding

The greatest tool for innovation, if not already adopted, is containerization. If the tech stack is monolithic, deploy Docker and Docker Compose. Second, set up a CI/CD pipeline with Jenkins and Git. Third, containerize the tech stack. Utilizing these tools, new technologies and new ideas can be prototyped quickly and exposed as a service. Crucial components can be refactored or replaced entirely in a new language quickly. New services and technologies can be added with ease and operate independently from existing codebases. Finally, review your development environment/s. If they cannot be stood up with a simple git clone and docker compose up, then it is too complicated. Spend time innovating, not replicating.
